A few hours after Vistara, the new full service airline from Tata/Singapore Airlines showed its first look, Jet Airways made an announcement, which sort of made their life come full circle. A few years ago (7!), Jet Airways bought out Air Sahara, and rebranded them to run them as JetLite. Jet Airways is upping the redemption game which they started a few years back, offering a 50% off on mileage redemption tickets across India for this quarter as of today. For the past two years, Jet Airways offered a 20% off on mileage redemptions, if booked online, something they discontinued in April 2014. Now, for travel between July 7, 2014 to September 30, 2014, they are offering a 50% off for redemptions across their domestic sectors in economy and Premiere class if you choose to make the redemption online. A few weeks back I had written about the regulatory notification which modified the rules for the use of Personal Electronic Devices on airplanes while in flight and on the ground. Since then, I’ve waited for airlines to go ahead and execute the rules on the ground. I’m glad to report now it is no issue to use your electronics on board. Jet Airways and Etihad Airways announce reciprocal benefits
Last year, Etihad completed the purchase of 24% equity stake in Jet Airways, as a part of building its own equity alliance. As a part of the alliance, usually most other airlines enter into a reciprocity with Etihad’s own loyalty program whereby the guests of both programs are granted privileges on each other’s metal. With Jet Airways, this has been a long time coming, and I suppose Etihad has been waiting to complete their acquisition of 51% of Jet Privilege to be able to integrate the two. Jet Airways’ new Check-in platform brings in new features
Earlier this week, I was on a round trip with Jet Airways, and I happened to notice that on April 16, 2014, there was a new interface for web check-in, and self hosted on the Jet Airways website (they were earlier using a Sabre solution). I found multiple good things happening with this interface, as compared to the old one. First and foremost, as compared to the earlier interface, the current one has multiple options to check-in. All you need is your name, your departure station, and either of your reservation locator, your frequent flyer number or your e-ticket number. Jet Airways homogenises convenience fee on all tickets
One of the changes that I’ve witnessed in the past weeks in the way Jet Airways charges a convenience fee / Optional Payment Charges. If you go back to 2012, Jet Airways had started imposing a fee to book from it directly, to cover the costs of the transaction, I assume. This fees, when started in 2012, was not very uniform and was charged basis the cabin of travel and routes (domestic/international). Jet Airways to withdraw bonus miles for web/kiosk check-in
Long long time ago, in 2008 or earlier, some genius inside Jet Airways, and I don’t mean it in a sarcastic way, figured the best way to reduce the crowd at the airport check-in counters was to incentivise people to check in via computers. And the incentive, they figured, was a bunch of extra miles. They started to award 250 bonus miles per sector to everyone who ever checked-in on a domestic or international flight via their website or kiosks (and SMS back in the day) on Jet Airways, and 125 bonus miles per sector for those using JetKonnect/JetLite. On Monday, I wrote about the sale that SpiceJet and Indigo sparked, where they offered discounted pricing on flights at least a month out. They called it “75% off compared to last-minute prices” however, I’d like to look at it more like a marketing gimmick, because who in their right minds would compare last minute fares to 30-day fares. The point is, there is still saving if you book now as compared to booking ten days down the line.
