Indian Government admits to being partisan to Lufthansa

I was just about to shut my laptop after writing my last post on the Air India – Star Alliance wriggle. But I just happened to note a new news report from The Economic Times, which also got a soundbyte from the aviation minister of India at the same place Reuters got its news from. For posterity sake, rather than quoting the article, let me leave a screenshot, because stories can be refiled online after an intervention. Now, let me quote the relevant bits: Civil Aviation minister told media that Lufthansa, which is the founding member of Star Alliance, was given a lot of benefits to ensure that Air India joins the grouping. “I believe a lot of facilities were…

Lufthansa sets a Re. price on its internet service on flights from India

Just a little followup post from the last time I wrote about Lufthansa’s internet offering on their flights from India. Lufthansa has now set an Indian Rupee price as well, in case someone wanted to pay using their INR CC on board. Like I mentioned in the last post, Lufthansa was charging 10.95 Euro/hour on this service, or 3,500 Miles & More miles. This is consistent with the Rs. 737 pricing set out in Indian Rupees. Lufthansa clearly is on a roll in India with the 747-8’s flying around from Delhi and Bangalore and the new lounges they are creating for their Indian travellers. Lufthansa now offers in-flight wifi on flights from Chennai & Mumbai

The mailbox had a sweet piece of news this afternoon from Lufthansa. Lufthansa clearly looks at India as a valuable market, as has been signified by their introduction of the Boeing 747-8i in India at an early stage, their investment in a lounge in Delhi and the upgrade of the business class in flights from Mumbai. Today, I spotted an interesting piece of news tucked away in a corner of a mailer from LH. FlyNet is the Lufthansa wifi internet offering, and LH has been trying to get as many planes equipped with on-board wifi as fast as possible. LH flies the Boeing 747-400 with the new First Class on-board from Mumbai to Frankfurt, the Airbus 330-300 with new Business…

And the next Lufthansa 747-8i destination is Bangalore!

Ok, no great news there. If you read my earlier posts then you already know about it. After bringing the 747-8i to Delhi on August 6 and launching the new lounge in Delhi Terminal 3 a week after, Lufthansa is putting the Bangalore-Frankfurt route up for operation over Los Angeles. As per an announcement on the website of Lufthansa, from 13 September 2012, FRA-BLR will be flown on the new plane, which means BLR-FRA will go to the 747-8i from 14th September 2012 onwards. Bookings for the new plane are now open. The launch of these two routes will complete Lufthansa’s plans to upgrade its Indian routes for the time being, along with the upgrade of the Business Class product…

Star Alliance members Lufthansa and Singapore Air open Delhi Lounges

Delhi Airport’s Terminal 3 is clearly the new hotbed of action for airlines. The benefit of a new terminal are clearly showing. While Indian carriers are still using contract lounges at their hub airports, oneworld airlines were depending on the Kingfisher First lounge, which is now closed. Emirates was the first off the mark, opening an exclusive lounge in Delhi. News now is that over the past one month, both Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines have opened up new lounges in Delhi T3 on the international side. Lufthansa opened up a lounge in Delhi T3 yesterday, a week after putting their second Boeing 747-8i into service there. This is Lufthansa’s first lounge in Asia designed according to the new global design…

And now, the new Lufthansa business class on Mumbai–Munich from September 6, 2012

Lufthansa clearly seems to be looking at India as one of the markets they want to dish out a good treatment to. After bringing on the new Boeing 747-8i to Delhi (from Frankfurt) as its second destination globally and first in Asia from August 6, now Lufthansa is upgrading its Mumbai service as well. Later in the year Lufthansa will also put the Boeing 748 on the famous Silicon Valley Express route (FRA-BLR). Back to the Mumbai service, Lufthansa is introducing a retrofitted A330-300 on the Munich-Mumbai-Munich daily service which will have the brand new business class product that everyone has been talking about so much. This one is going to be available on Munich-Mumbai from September 2, and Mumbai-Munich…

The Lufthansa 747-8i, coming to Delhi on August 6

Like I previously wrote in March, Lufthansa has been planning to bring their latest acquisition, the Boeing 747-8i to it’s Delhi-Frankfurt and Bangalore-Frankfurt routes. (Pic courtesy Lufthansa) Lufthansa has recently taken delivery of the second 747-8i plane and is all set to put it on service on the Frankfurt-Delhi-Frankfurt route with effect from August 6. Lufthansa has confirmed the plane swap on its Facebook page as well, making Delhi the launch destination of the B747-8i in Asia, and the second destination of this plane after Washington DC. This will also mark the debut of the new Business Class product in Asia. Anybody booked to fly this bird? Write to me for a guest post please. Related Post: The Lufthansa 747-8i,…

Travelling to the US/Canada/India via Europe? Now more checked bags for you!

Last year in October, I wrote about the Indian aviation regulator sending a stinker to all foreign airlines operating from India, about the baggage allowance of 1 23 kg (50 lb) checked-bag being not the standard offer for passengers travelling economy, while all Indian airlines offer 2×23 kgs (50 lb) baggage to be checked-in. We never heard much of it back then, but seems like the arm-twisting worked with the Lufthansa group. In a change of tack, Lufthansa has announced a new allowance for passengers travelling between India and the USA, Canada (or vice versa) on Lufthansa group airlines. Lufthansa, Swiss, Brussels Airlines and Austrian Airlines will offer two 23 kgs (50 lb) bags as checked bag allowance for all flights ticketed on or…

When Lufthansa became Jet Airways

Being the inquisitive soul I am, I was working on another blogpost for the readers today. This one concerned Lufthansa in India. Now, out of pure guess work and intuition, I typed away http://www.lufthansa.co.in/ in my browser to check my facts. As you all would know, .co.in is the domain registration for corporations in India. But, I quickly hit F5 and then again, because I could not believe what I saw… Yes, I thought it could be the 3AM effect when I am wide awake due to the last Gingerbread Cookie Latte I had a few hours back with a huge helping of Carrot Cake. So, I tried it on another browser, and then on another computer. Same results…. End…
