Why Jet Airways bashing may always not be right all the time!

Let me admit, I am slightly biased towards Jet Airways, but I do give them a piece of my mind on Twitter when they don’t operate planes with clean aisles, or chicken meals without the chicken and so on. They send back a polite email, no promise, no action, but we leave it at that. Anyhow, this is about a blogpost that has recently gone viral, blaming Jet Airways for all their trouble. A couple of readers pointed me in this direction, so I thought it would be good to give some perspective on how airlines work, and why a lot of this looks over the top exaggeration. First, the original post is here, but it relates to a recent…

Jet Airways offering 2x-3x miles between Delhi and Goa/Hyderabad

One of the strategies Jet Airways used to protect its market on the Delhi-Mumbai, Mumbai-Ahmedabad and Delhi-Ahmedabad sectors, which were launch sectors for Vistara, was to offer 2x base miles on these sectors in Economy, and 3x base miles in Business Class. This promotion comes to an end on March 31, 2015. A few days ago, Vistara announced their flights to Goa and Hyderabad. At that time, I wondered when would Jet Airways be reacting by announcing more miles on these segments, and they did do this yesterday, however, they made me wait for over a month! Anyhow, just last evening I got word that JetPrivilege will be offering bonus miles for travel from 18 March 2015 to 31 May…

Jet Airways trialling mobile boarding passes in India

While I love me a paper boarding pass for my #avgeek collection, they are a dying breed. Except in India so far, where paper boarding passes are used to go through the abuse of the security check, with stamps to signify that a security screening was done. However, there is change coming through. Jet Airways has recently partnered with the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, the people responsible for security of the civil aviation flights in the Indian skies. Along with BCAS and the Bangalore airport, Jet Airways is running a pilot to trial the use of barcoded boarding passes on passenger mobile phones. This is a good move after the security requirement for a printed ticket was shot down.…

JetPrivilege Platinum? You may bring a guest along to the lounge

Jet Airways withdrew the access for a +1 guest for higher end elites in 2011. Before 2012, the policy for lounge access used to allow JP Platinum members to bring 1 guest along to the lounge, regardless of the fact if the Platinum member was flying Economy or Business class. As a not so frequent flyer then, I used to benefit travelling with my colleagues at that point of time who were Platinum tier members. However, with effect from February 16, 2015, Jet Airways has reinstated this benefit for Platinum tier members. Which means, Jet Airways Platinum tier members can now help a family member/friend/colleague into the lounge along with them as well. Do remember however, that this lounge access…

Is Jet Airways doing the ‘Return of the Tamarind Candy’ all wrong?

Long long time ago, a staple fixture on all the Jet Airways’ flights was a little basket full of tamarind candies, along with cotton for ear plugs. I never could have enough of them, and that was one of the things that went away when the economy went rough, and Jet Airways had to pick things to cut off from their in-flight experience. Now, as a part of the revamp of the airline, Jet Airways brought back meal service on all flights. Some short flights you get a cold sandwich, on long flights you get a hot meal. But the candy is back, and it has been staring me in my face on almost every flight since December 2014 I’ve…

Jet Airways’ JetPrivilege program is making it easier for you to become an elite!

It is Friday evening, and that time of the day when loyalty programs roll out enhancements. But this time they are real enhancements! One of the programs under restructuring, and in final laps of restructuring perhaps is the Jet Airways loyalty program JetPrivilege. Over the past 6-8 months they have launched a lot of changes, including the ability to earn higher JP Miles for flights. Coming to today’s changes, JetPrivilege is making some solid enhancements in my view. Until now, to qualify for a tier upgrade, you either could earn it by doing segments (earn tier points) or by miles. In terms of tier points, you had a very flat structure in terms of earning, you got 1 tier point…

JetPrivilege upgrades restructured for good!

Last year, Jet Airways’ loyalty program JetPrivilege restructured their earning and burning structure, and did away with fuel surcharges on award tickets. On the back of a higher mileage required for an award ticket in premium cabins (a BOM-BRU business class o.w. moved from 54,000 JP Miles to 85,000 JP Miles, but no fuel surcharge now), there was a sweet spot that existed, called mileage upgrades. You earn miles for your ticket, and you pay lower number of miles for your upgrade as compared to a business class redemptions, hence it was a great deal, since you really had a much less net outflow in terms of number of miles for a premium cabin travel. The standard benchmark for an…
