Lufthansa loses “coveted” Skytrax 5-Star Rating

Skytrax is a rating programme for airlines, based in the UK, and they dole out ratings to airlines and airports around the globe, as per their claim, by the quality of product and staff service standards.

Skytrax downgrades Lufthansa to a 4-star airline.

In 2017, Lufthansa won the Five-Star airline label from Skytrax, making it the only airline outside of Asia to get such a label. The airline went the whole nine-yards tomtomming about the recognition.

There was even a special decal for the new rating received.

But what was mysterious about the whole process was the fact that the airline did not receive this rating on the back of an excellent product but in anticipation of a new long-haul Business Class seat that was announced, but still not on any Lufthansa aircraft, since it was supposed to be first installed on Lufthansa’s 777X, which, by the way, means, the product isn’t coming online till at least 2025 at the moment.

Lufthansa’s Business Class announced in 2017

In the meantime, Lufthansa continues to operate various dated products across its fleet and make multiple cutbacks to the economy cabin. And now, it is a 4-star rated airline as per Skytrax.

With this, all the airlines still have a five-star rating from Skytrax are in Asia again.

  • ANA All Nippon Airways
  • Asiana Airlines
  • Cathay Pacific
  • EVA Air
  • Garuda Indonesia
  • Hainan Airlines
  • Japan Airlines
  • Korean Air
  • Qatar Airways
  • Singapore Airlines

Bottomline

Skytrax has downgraded Lufthansa’s rating from a 5-star airline to a 4-star airline as per their rating system. One of the principal inputs, at the time, for Lufthansa being awarded this was a new business class product, which was still at least three years from entering service.

What do you think of Lufthansa losing its Skytrax 5-star rating?

  1. I have lost
    My card miles@more from LH
Over a year I have sent them
    Noumerous emails
    And I get the same
Reply a case number and never ever ever get a new miles@more card
In the meantime my company keep on using LH for my business
    Without using anymore miles
    I think
Lufthansa is falling apart after Covid big time
Not to mention the service is poor in business and offcourse theee is absolutely no service economy short flights long hull flights barely something so we can survive
    Till landing
    Thank you

  2. LH approach with frequent flyers is not even the level passengers should expect.
Missed a connection in FRA and they offered hotel (+30km from the airport)(cheap, really cheap hotel), 18eur for a meal and no extra, when flying biz and gold/senator level… LH is losing is way and brings down the whole attention. Sad, very sad.

  3. I have P1 status with QF and PPS with SQ
I do not believe that the process Skytrax uses to assess airlines is

    1. Ethical
    2. Fair
    3. Evidence based
    4. Unbiased

As such, I would encourage readers to research independently

    • You are absolutely right
Is skytrack being paid by airlines to give them 5 star ratings

Qatar airways used to be great before but now according to my personal experience on May 9/2022 flight
      QA was horrible

      Please read their reviews
      Not skytrack but others
      Complaining every day

      QA has lost their ethics

  4. Never deserved it in the first place with their Business Class upgrade way behind schedule and lightyears behind the competition. Pretty sad when even Star Alliance partner United has a better Business Class.

  5. Hopefully this will wake up LH’s Spohr and Co to do something about their dismal performance and service

    • I agree! Flew LH in November 21 and noticed how the service was worse…paid $70 for a check-in for the first time in all the years I’ve flown with them. Their service was the reason I paid a little extra. In May I flew to Greece on American and was very pleasantly surprised with how great the service was, and no baggage fee. American is my new go to for overseas!
