SpiceJet revamps SpicEngage, relaunches as SpiceScreen for inflight streaming IFE

A couple of years ago, SpiceJet launched an in-flight wireless streaming service called SpicEngage, which was quietly discontinued it in 2019. We tried it out, and it was mostly snackable content and content from new-age media, and no movies and stuff.

Now, SpiceJet has launched a revamped version of its wireless IFE screening solution and renamed it as SpiceScreen. SpiceScreen is developed by the same company which earlier helped SpiceJet launch SpicEngage, Mobi Serve, which works under the brand name of VuLiv. Spicecreen is now available across all Spicejet flights.

Spicescreen is a light-in-weight, wireless entertainment system that enables delivery of content on to the personal devices of the passengers through the wifi network. Travellers can access Spicescreen content including movies, TV shows, cartoons and stand-up comedies, on any of their hand-held devices such as a smartphone, tablet or a laptop by directly connecting to the onboard wireless network. As per SpiceJet, the new version of their IFE systems is hosted on Android phones, which serve as the wifi broadcast mesh and content hubs both.

A first look at SpiceScreen shows the content library is much more varied as compared to the previous version. There are Hindi Movies, Regional Movies, Web Specials and Destination specials.

While I am still to try this out, the new SpiceScreen is available on all SpiceJet flights now (where SpiceJet flies their equipment), as I listed above. But on first look, this looks like a much better attempt and a much more refined one as well. Additionally, SpiceJet claims this costs them only 1% of the earlier solution, so, even better! What is not clear, however, is if it will be activated gate to gate or only about 10,000 feet.
