We have written extensively about the HDFC Bank Diners Club 10x program. HDFC Bank Diners Club 10X Rewards were my favourite kind of reward currency primarily due to some offbeat transfer partners they provided in India. The list went away late last year, but still I look at it as a 33% cashback card.
The list of 10X partners frequently gets updated, but no major shakeups, until now that is. The focus is on travel & e-commerce. They initially put out a year long list of partners, but then recalled it, and started to extend the date of the promotion by the months. Here are the announcements for April, May , June & July 2016. Then, it got extended through March 2017 but applied caps on reward earning per month, and a one month extension through April 2017. In May, they put a new list valid through July 2017.
One of the key changes introduced this time around was the booting out of travel partners such as GoIbibo and bringing in the HDFC captive Smartbuy platform. You see, this ways they make some money off Cleartrip before they pass you on the discount as reward points.
Currently, the 10X points were only available on the Hotel and Flights category. However, this may be changing now. Because, as per a new notice put out by HDFC Bank on the T&C page:
SmartBuy offer is applicable on all categories as mentioned in SmartBuy_10X_T&C.. Also customer has to continue as a guest to avail the offer.
That means, you could earn 10X points for the following activities with HDFC SmartBuy here on:
- Flight Booking
- Hotel Booking
- Bus Tickets
- Movie Bookings
- Mobile & DTH
- Electricity Bills
- Gas Pay
- Charity
- Gifting
The current 10X offer runs through July 2017, but I’m guessing with these late changes, new offers must be renewed shortly. I’ll update more on when that happens.
Bottomline
This is a great opportunity to get some spend on the HDFC Bank Diners Club Credit Cards. You get tonnes of points to pay your bills or book your movies, now via HDFC SmartBuy.
Have you had success earning more points with HDFC Bank SmartBuy?
I don’t see any options for Bill payments on Smart buy. I don’t think we can get 10x or use diners points for Electricity bill payment. Can someone please confirm
earlier i used to pay mobile bill using diners club black rewards points on dinersclub website. But i cannot see that option now, is it also revoked?
Will Diners Jet eligible for any of these for 10x?
@Amit no. no cobrand cards here.
Does anyone know if loading up Amazon Pay Balance counts as e-wallet and is therefore not applicable for 10X? Same question for Bigbasket’s e-wallet?
i was trying to find the same info every where but did not get any clear cut info.
however, i checked my past statement and it shows same for all amazon transactions (amazon pay balance or shopping) so i think it will have 10X.
Also, loaded my BB wallet last time which i feel i got 10X as per rough calc i did.
E-Wallets under their terms should be like paytm / free charge / Movikwik as per my understanding so loaded 10 k today on Amazon as not sure if this offer will be extended.
Effective 1st July’2017,
a. EasyEMI and e-wallet loading transactions will not accrue Reward points.
b. Reward points accrued will be reversed if a retail transaction is converted into SmartEMI.
c. Reward points accrued for Insurance transactions will have a maximum cap of 2,000 per transaction
Amazon India is running a prime sale today (10th July) and tomorrow (11th July) with HDFC credit card cashback of 15% (Max Rs 2000). I checked T&C, nowhere is Diners card is ommitted from the list. Does this mean Black card holders get 33% reward points and 2000 Rs cashback as well. ?? However, 15 days back when Amazon was running a similar campaign with HDFC (15% cashback), diners was not ommited on Amazon’s T&C, but when i got an emailer from HDFC directly promoting this Amazon sale and offer, it was mentioned Diner’s card is not eligible. This time I have not received any promotional email from HDFC…Any ideas ?
If i remember well, i got a mail from HDFC promotional section showing 2000 cash back benefit during sale in addition to 33% points on Diner Black so both should be applicable.
Flipkart did not give cash back option during recent sale with hdfc so for cash back, i had to be bought on flipkart directly.
Sourav – Compare & shop in Hdfc smartbuy asks for first 6 digits of your card to validate participation in 10x. Did that happen for you ?
Ajay – I agree, tickets etc booked via smartbuy appear as smartbuy on the statement and not cleartrip.
To me it appears that 10X is also valid on compare & shop, a new section on HDFC smartbuy portal. Compare & shop leads you to portals like flipkart & croma where 10X is otherwise not available. This opens up areas like electronics etc where you can get 10X.
What’s your view Ajay ?
@Amit will check it out. But rule of thumb, if your billing is completed at smartbuy and entry on your card folio should be stating Smartbuy, you get the 10x. else not.
I have the same question. purchased a trolley worth ~2500 from flipkart via Smartbuy yesterday. Debit message says flipkart, but I have screenshots till the payment page where on top it’s smartbuy|flipkart written with both the logos. Will be interesting if 10X points post.

@Sourav, I don’t think they will post 10x points here. When I buy tickets from Smartbuy the entry comes as Smartbuy, no vendor name and so on, even though Cleartrip did the actual tickets. Hence, only the whitelabeled portal will get 10x is my view
Shopping via Smartbuy on Flipkart is shown under 10x so even if statement shows transaction on Flipkart, i believe we should be getting 10x points.
I did two transactions but not very sure if i got 10x as they come delayed for smartbuy transactions.
