Lufthansa held its annual Lufthansa Capital Markets Day yesterday, which is the annual dissertation from the company about their strategy and their future outlook about not just Lufthansa the airline, but the whole of the Lufthansa Group. While the biggest announcement coming from there seems to be the Lufthansa Group making a u-turn on Eurowings and Brussels Airlines future, it is the next best thing that got me more interested.

Lufthansa talked about their revenue from various cabins, where they mentioned that the revenue from their footprint allocated to Premium Economy was even 6% higher than their Business Class section. But, there was also a subtle clue about what the next generation Premium Economy Class seat will be, or at least so I think.

The seat above, in the hardshell, seems to depict the new Lufthansa Premium Economy Seat, which will be rolled out on Lufthansa’s Boeing 777-9 next year (in Q3 2020), to be followed by Swiss on board their Boeing 777-3 (in Q1 2021) and Swiss’ Airbus A340-300 (in Q2 2021)

Having seen but not used the current Lufthansa Premium Economy seats, I can figure that these seats are more private of sorts, coming with a larger divider of sorts in terms of the shell for the seat. Not just that, this shell will allow for recline to be done within the seat shell itself, rather than recline behind into another passenger’s private space (which is the case with the current seat).

For reference, late 2017, Lufthansa had revealed the Business Class seats for the 777X, where Lufthansa finally got around to making aisle access for everyone. There is continued chatter about Lufthansa moving to sell the throne seats indicated below as a separate higher price point.

It does look, then, with the space provided with the fuselage of the Boeing 777X, Lufthansa may be moving to a fixed shell Premium Economy Seat as well.
