At the beginning of January 2022, West Bengal had mandated that all airlines operate flights from Delhi/Mumbai to all West Bengal airports only two times a week. It turns out, IndiGo is going to do just that.

IndiGo to cancel most flights between Delhi/Mumbai & West Bengal for three months

IndiGo has now decided to cancel all non-stop flights from Delhi (11 a day) and Mumbai (5 a day) to Kolkata until the end of March 2022, apart from operations on Monday and Friday prescribed by the West Bengal government. Apart from this, Bagdogra and Durgapur flights from Delhi/Mumbai will be cancelled until March-end. The flights operating from these airports to Delhi and Mumbai have similarly been cancelled, apart from some circuitous routings that might not involve a change of plane but are longer to fly on (for instance, 6E 282 is still operating CCU-AZL-GAU-BOM without a change of aircraft and still being sold like that). 6E282 also used to have a DEL-CCU leg, which has been cancelled, of course!

In a press statement issued by IndiGo, the airline said,

Flights to Kolkata, Durgapur and Bagdogra from Delhi and Mumbai will remain cancelled on all days except Mondays and Fridays for the next three months. Flyers can claim refund or book alternative flights.

As we write these, all the non-stop flights have already been taken off sale from the IndiGo website, and you are only going to be able to buy connecting flights into these airports on IndiGo.

 

There are almost 25 daily flights between Delhi and Kolkata and 15 daily flights between Mumbai and Kolkata. IndiGo accounts for nearly half the flights on these sectors. As per the statement issued by IndiGo, the limited capacity may lead to an inflationary impact on the airfares on these routes.

While IndiGo will be reaching out to passengers on their listed phone numbers or email address to advise them of the cancellation and their options, you can yourselves head to Plan B to see and assess these options.

Bottomline

IndiGo has pulled the plug on flights between Delhi/Mumbai and West Bengal airports till March 2022, apart from flights on Monday and Friday. In the days ahead, you can still fly on connections from other Indian cities into these airports. The airline will reach out to you if your flight was impacted, or you can head to Plan B to see and assess your options.
