Hyderabad airport to move international departures to interim terminal

In the past 10 years, I’ve seen Hyderabad’s Airport grow strength to strength. What once was a swanky yet cozy new airport has been bursting through its seams recently. A terminal which was originally designed to handle 12 million passengers a year, now handles close to 20 million passengers. The new Hyderabad interim international terminal, which hopes to ease congestion, goes live tomorrow.

Starting October 23, 2018, head to the new Interim International Departures Terminal (IIDT) if you are catching an international flight out of Hyderabad. If your flight is an international tagged flight, this is your terminal as well. They include AI 127, AI 952, AI 978, AI 988, AI 966 and AI 051.

The IIDT is located close to the Hajj Terminal. Accessible from both the Shamshabad and Srisalam side, all you need to do is follow the updated signage. If you are still confused, watch Hyderabad Airport’s video about how you can get to the new terminal.

This is not exactly a terminal per se, it is just a new concourse. You complete your check-in and passport control formalities here. But your boarding gates will still be in the main terminal which is connected via escalators and elevators. Also, duty-free stores have been moved here. If you want to get to the new terminal from the arrivals ramp, hop onto the free airport shuttle.

Bottomline

Hyderabad Airport’s Interim International Departure Terminal will no doubt help in improving passenger experience on the ground. But at the same time, as the name suggests, it is only a short-term solution. With 24% YoY passenger growth, it won’t be too long before the airport gets full. GMR is working on upping capacity hopefully.

Do you think the interim terminal is a good solution to Hyderabad Airport’s capacity issues?
