Vistara & Japan Airlines flyers can now earn and burn on each other’s loyalty programmes

Vistara and Japan Airlines (JAL), the flag carrier of Japan, have inked a partnership to allow members of their frequent flyer programs to earn miles/points on each other, effective August 31 2020. The ability to burn points was already enabled but not officially announced on July 1, 2020.

The partnership enables Club Vistara members to earn and redeem CV Points on flights operated and marketed by Japan Airlines, covering an extensive global network that includes nearly 80 destinations across 20 countries and regions. Reciprocally, members of JAL Mileage Bank will be able to earn and spend their miles on flights operated and marketed by Vistara across a steadily growing network of destinations within and outside of India.

Vistara and Japan Airlines had first signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in September 2017 to pursue commercial opportunities together. Last year, the two airlines entered a codeshare agreement, with the network of codeshare services having been expanded earlier this year.

At present, Club Vistara members can earn and redeem CV Points when travelling on other partner airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Silk Air, and United Airlines.

For Club Vistara members, here is the earning rate on Japan Airlines. There is a change on October 1 for a particular fare class of Premium Economy, so be mindful of that.

Vistara is on course to expand its international network with medium and long-haul international operations, foraying in markets outside of Southeast Asia and the Middle East, using its newly-inducted Airbus A321neo and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. The airline recently started services to London Heathrow as part of the bilateral ‘transport bubble’ between India and the UK and is also considering similar flights to Paris and Frankfurt.

I will do a separate post on Vistara/Japan Airlines burning opportunities, but here is the redemption chart for JAL using Club Vistara, and here is the redemption chart for Vistara redemption using JAL Mileage Bank.

What do you think of the tie-up between Vistara and Japan Airlines for earning and burning?
