United pulls out of Chicago – New Delhi operations; remains with only one flight to India

The extended geopolitical situation between Russia and Ukraine continues to wreak havoc on airline operations in large swathes of the world. United, which had suspended Delhi – San Francisco and Mumbai – Newark operations, has now pulled out of Chicago – Delhi operations as well.

United suspends its flight between Chicago and Delhi.

United has suspended its daily nonstop flight between Chicago and Delhi for the entire summer. The airline pulled out of the route about a week ago when it stopped operating flights. From Chicago ORD to Delhi, the last flight operated on January 29, 2023, and landed on January 30, 2023, in Delhi. On the other side, the final flight operated on January 31, 2023, and arrived in Chicago on the same day.

The airline is no longer showing the flight in operation, even through the Summer 2023 schedule. The flight is open for sale, though in the Winter 2023 schedule, which means the resumption of the route tentatively is planned on October 28, 2023, only. For the time being, passengers would ideally be re-accommodated on the Newark-Delhi flight of United.

While the query sent to United remains unanswered, the most probable cause could be the inability of these flights to overfly Russian airspace. The only operator now on this route, Air India, on the other hand, will be able to operate their flights as they continue to use the airspace over Russia.

Bottomline

United’s Chicago Delhi operation has been put on hold since the end of January 2023, and the current estimated timeline for it to return is in the end of October 2023. In the meantime, United will only have one flight operation, to Delhi from Newark for the time being. Air India, on the other hand, will serve between India and the US with 37 non-stop flights every week.

What do you think of United’s move to pull out of the Chicago – Delhi route?

  1. Any news on United flights from Delhi-Chicago Direct soon? Heard that it is starting from Mar 20, 2024, is it true?

  2. The plan to suspend the flight was actually made in December. I was booked on this flight in May and received an email in late December about being rebooked on the EWR – DEL flight. However, I got them to rebook me via Munich instead because the timing of EWR – DEL wasn’t working out.
