United Airlines drops Bengaluru flight ambitions, goes double daily to Delhi

For the longest time, United has been trying to find a way to add more services to India, given they had to withdraw their services from Delhi to Chicago and Mumbai to Newark (and v.v). Recently, they got into a deep partnership with Emirates. However, India curtly told them that the flights between India and the UAE on Emirates cannot be sold as UA codeshares. Now, there is a fresh move from United.

United drops San Francisco to Bengaluru flight for good.

United announced plans to launch a flight between San Francisco and Bengaluru in 2020 and has been postponing the launch since 2021 when the flight was supposed to go live. As of now, the route has been dropped from schedule planning altogether.

United adds a second daily flight between Newark and New Delhi in October 2023

Beginning October 27, 2023 (the beginning of the winter schedule), United has added a second daily flight scheduled between New Delhi and Newark. The second flight will also be operated using a Boeing 787-9 aircraft and operate a daytime service in both directions.  Here are the timings of the new flight:

  • UA816: Departs Newark at 09:40 am and arrives in Delhi at 11:10 am (+1), with a block time of 15 hours.
  • UA817: Departs New Delhi at 01:15 pm and arrives in Newark at 07:40 pm the same day, with a block time of 16 hours and 55 minutes.

This second flight has been scheduled for the time being only through March 30, 2024. So it could be a seasonal or long-term addition to the United schedule, depending on how it performs for the first schedule.

United’s Boeing 787-9 has 48 Polaris Business Class seats, 21 Premium Plus PEY seats and 188 Economy Class seats, including 39 Economy Plus seats.

For the time being, this is a great approach from United to break the status quo and at least add a flight where it will see capacity. Winters are when traffic from the US to India is high, and United will be the only US-based carrier to offer two options on the route (American Airlines offers flights between New York JFK and Delhi as well).

United Airlines is rolling with the punches. It has been unable to restart the flights between SFO-DEL/ORD-DEL and cannot launch SFO-BLR for now, so it is adding seasonal capacity for EWR-DEL for now. The second flight should launch On October 27, 2023, from Newark.

What do you think of the addition of new flights between New York and Delhi?

  1. Traffic from Hyderabad to USA is substantial ( may be as much as Delhi/Mumbai). UA should evaluate Hyderabad -ORD route, instead of second DEL-ERW route.

  2. Easier to add a Code Share with Air India and increase traffic from Mumbai. Delhi is a seperate market. Neglecting Mumbai for whatsoever reason or logistics will allow Tata Air India to head from daily double to daily triple , Tata Air India with its brand A350’s rolling out soon will be the prime nonstop product in the Indian -American Mumbai Market. Regardless sad not see United in Mumbai and one cannot deny the impressive connections at Newark within the United System.
