Star Alliance members Lufthansa and Singapore Air open Delhi Lounges

Delhi Airport’s Terminal 3 is clearly the new hotbed of action for airlines. The benefit of a new terminal are clearly showing. While Indian carriers are still using contract lounges at their hub airports, oneworld airlines were depending on the Kingfisher First lounge, which is now closed. Emirates was the first off the mark, opening an exclusive lounge in Delhi. News now is that over the past one month, both Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines have opened up new lounges in Delhi T3 on the international side. Lufthansa opened up a lounge in Delhi T3 yesterday, a week after putting their second Boeing 747-8i into service there. This is Lufthansa’s first lounge in Asia designed according to the new global design…

Reader Indranil sends in this picture of the SQ Mega Ark. He says that SQ does not go for any livery changes after one of its promotional livery plane crashed in Taiwan. Till date the only difference is the SQ freighters (747-s which are called Mega Arks). Here is one of them, shot from the East Coast Park, Singapore, on its approach to Singapore Changi Airport. Thank you Indranil! Airline: Singapore Airlines (Cargo) Location: On approach to Changi Airport Runway 02L Airframe: Boeing 747-412F/SCD If you want to share a picture of a plane, an airport, or anything aviation related, please send it across to aj@livefromalounge.com with the details and I’ll put it up here. Virgin Australia and Singapore Airlines alliance to launch in a week…

Alliances are not a matter of choice but a matter of need for airlines in Australia for a network that extends their own and gets them to serve flyers who want to travel all over the place. In the case of Qantas, they have the oneworld allliance by their side. But considering Virgin does not like getting into alliances, or at least not just yet, they have been working with an interlining strategy so far where they have a network of partners such as Etihad, Delta and Virgin Atlantic to complete their network. However, they now have an alliance with Singapore Airlines, which should be a gamechanger in feeding traffic to their domestic network from the hub of SIN. The alliance,…

Singapore Airlines launches deals from India to USA on the A380

Singapore Airlines is launching the A380 service to the USA via Frankfurt from 15 January 2011. On this occassion, they are offering a special fare of INR 60,000 for a return trip from Mumbai to any of the four US locations served by SIA, namely, New York, Houston, Los Angeles and San Fransisco. This deal is valid for the Economy segment, and from any of the 10 airports served in India by Singapore Airlines / Silk Air. The deal is sweet in case you are willing for a longer routing from India and want to try out the SQ A380, which I bet would be very good service. I’ve never flown SQ to the USA, but I am thinking if…

Gotta Scoot!!?!!

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, scoot means “to move swiftly”, but with the new Singapore Airlines subsidiary choosing to be named “Scoot”, I am not sure if they are hitting or missing the point. To me, it looks more like they are missing the point than getting it! Scoot, which was officially unveiled today, has been getting quite some press even before it took off. With this airline, Singapore Airlines wants to complete the loop of offering a choice of services to passengers. SIA being the full-service version, SilkAir being the regional version and Scoot being the medium to long-haul intercontinental version. The modus operandi is simple. The airline will operate in a 2-class configuration, and allow customization of most…
