Another SpiceJet sale? I have seen a lot of these sales this year but this one takes the cake. SpiceJet has dropped prices to INR 1. The next slabs are INR 799 and INR 1499. Tickets can be booked between 1st and 3rd April 2014, for travel between 1st July 2014 to 28th March 2015. The discounts, as per SpiceJet should only be on the new flights introduced. However, they are pretty randomly scattered all over the place. Now, while the detailed terms and conditions say there is no fuel surcharge on the INR 1 tickets, the fuel surcharge is indeed being charged on the INR 1 tickets at some points (highlighted). Here are the T&C: The offer is valid…

SpiceJet gets into trouble for celebrating Holi on the plane
SpiceJet decided to be a little excited about the festival of colours, Holi, which was celebrated around the country earlier this week. Not a bad thought in its own right, except this attracted the attention of the aviation regulator DGCA who thinks they have not done the right thing by organising some song and dance on board. Here is a video of the dance on board SG 876 between Goa and Bangalore as captured by a passenger. The same performance was conducted on 8 flights of the airline on March 17. As per the airline, the cabin was staffed with three extra cabin crew members and the cockpit was manned at all times during this 2.5 minutes performance. However, the…
Upto 75% India airfare sales extend till Feb 27 and Jet Airways joins in
On Monday, I wrote about the sale that SpiceJet and Indigo sparked, where they offered discounted pricing on flights at least a month out. They called it “75% off compared to last-minute prices” however, I’d like to look at it more like a marketing gimmick, because who in their right minds would compare last minute fares to 30-day fares. The point is, there is still saving if you book now as compared to booking ten days down the line. The sale has now been extended by SpiceJet to 27th February 2014 midnight, as a response to Jet Airways coming into the fray. Indigo is in the fray as well, but no official word on if the sale is up till…
SpiceJet & Indigo 75% off between April 1 & June 30, 2014
This seems reckless and the way to the bottom, however, the airlines don’t seem to understand that. After a massive sale in January 2014 which SpiceJet started, and Indigo, GoAir, Air India and Jet Airways followed in that order, SpiceJet held its 30% off sale and is now up to its third sale in a month’s time. This morning, SpiceJet has put out a new sale, for the summer months of April 1, 2014 to June 30, 2014 where you get, apparently, up to 75% off (compared to last minute fares). Indigo has joined in as well. Here are some sample fares they’ve put out. I have validated a couple of these on random dates, and they are lower, but…
Great Indian Fare Sale 2: SpiceJet, Indigo & GoAir offer 30% off
This morning, less than a week after the 50% off fare sales from all 5 domestic airlines Spicejet, Indigo, GoAir, Air India and Jet Airways/JetKonnect got over, Spicejet was back in the market with a second fare sale this morning, this time promising 30% off on weekday travel for booking 30 days out. Indigo matched the fares in a few hours. While I wrote this, GoAir came into the mix as well. [Update: Air India and Jet Airways seemed to have joined this sale as well on the night of Friday 31 January 2014] The key terms and conditions on this one as follows: Book between 31 January 2014 and 2nd February 2014 for +30 day travel upto 15 April…
SpiceJet 50% off sale till 23 Jan 2014
It has almost become an annual event. A SpiceJet fare sale almost always kicks in the lean season, and last year they had two of them in Q1 2013. Just this morning, SpiceJet has announced the details of a 50% off Fare Sale they have put out on all direct routes in the country for travel 30 days out. The sale is valid for travel till April 15, 2014 on direct flights. Connecting and Via flights don’t count. [Someone pointed out to me the sale is also for their international routes however I could not verify this.] Some of the fares they have put out look very very tempting, and are infact 50% off the regular fares on those routes.…
SpiceJet rejigs network, withdraws from Guangzhou and goes to Hong Kong
Spicejet is trying to get it right, one more time. However, it’s strategy to open new stations and routes which haven’t been flown before from India, is clearly not working. For instance, Pondicherry, which was opened up a year ago, is now being closed. The airline announced the following route changes as a part of its summer schedule: Withdraw Pune – Bangkok Withdraw Varanasi – Sharjah Withdraw Delhi – Guangzhou Pondicherry is being closed down Trichy is being closed down Hong Kong & Dhaka will be the new stations in the network (Details not available yet) So, for an airline which has been trying to get it right for a few years, this is one more time they are trying…

SpiceJet in trouble?
I’m not trying to set off speculation here, but seems last week has been troublesome for SpiceJet. The airline, one of India’s low-cost carriers, has been plagued by low on-time performance for a long time now (85% on time, lowest amongst domestic scheduled carriers + 78% at Delhi, which is its home airport). Apparently their financial situation has not been too great as well, and they have been talking to Kuwait Airways amongst others for equity partnership. An indication of how things are for them lies in what happened with them last month, when Airports Authority of India, a government-owned airport operator which operates most of the airports in India, put them on cash & carry, which means they do…

Details on Spicejet’s Flexifly with Optiontown
A few days ago I wrote about the recent arrangement between Spicejet and Optiontown to offer a few of Optiontown products on Spicejet. A few days later, the PR machinery of Optiontown went about town talking about the services and possible pricing. Here are some quotable quotes: On the Flexible Rewards Option, where you could surrender your seat on a potentially full flight and get another flight ticket to your destination, along with a small reward: A passenger can earn up to Rs 1,500 by agreeing to fly on a different time and enabling the airline to make money by selling the seat to a last minute passenger. From Spicejet’s own website on the Flexible Rewards Option: If Optiontown moves…
