Starwood and Uber Partnership goes south, literally!

In 2015, Starwood announced a great association in the loyalty marketing space. Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) tied up with Uber to offer SPG and Uber members the potential to earn SPG loyalty points for their Uber rides.

SPG&Uber

This partnership has remained steady for 2 years and is one of our favorite ways to score extra SPG points through his daily Uber rides.

However, as on February 1, 2017 this partnership has been devalued and effective next month SPG  members will earn:

Uber

  • 1 Starpoint for every 2 USD spent on Uber rides, rather than the current earning equation of 1 Starpoint per 1 USD spend.
  • During stays at SPG hotels, members will earn at a flat rate of  2 Starpoints for every 1 USD spend on Uber. Your earning capacity will no longer be co-related to your SPG status, where currently SPG Gold and Platinum members earn 3 Starpoints for every USD spent and SPG Platinum get 4 Starpoints per USD.

To be able to earn SPG points from your Uber rides:

  • You need to stay at least once in an SPG property in the calendar year, apart from January which carries forward from the previous year’s stay. You only start earning SPG points for Uber rides after this stay is completed.
  • You only earn for the first USD 10000 in spend per calendar year.

Additionally, Starwood will be running a promotion all through February where SPG members staying at Starwood hotels will earn 5 Starpoints for every USD spent on their Uber rides. There is no registration required to avail this offer. If your SPG and Uber accounts are linked this promotion will automatically get activated.

We are of course sad to see the devaluation in this partnership. It was an easy and a hassle free way to get extra Starpoints out of our daily Uber commute.

Have you been converting your Uber spend in to Starpoints? What do you think of this devaluation?
