No, SriLankan Airlines Offer is not about ‘Buy 1 Get 1 Free’ on flights

Last week, Sri Lanka opened up to Indian travellers, and in a big way, by notifying that they would also accept travellers with Covaxin jabs, which is a rarity so far. Almost simultaneously, SriLankan Airlines, the national carrier of Sri Lanka, announced that they would offer ‘free’ tickets to those originating from India as a “buy 1, get 1” free offer.

Oddly, there were no details of this ‘promotion’ anywhere on the interweb, and you can’t book it online. Everyone was being told to connect offline or via DMs, and when someone did, they were told to contact their travel agents. Meanwhile, they got a lot of free press with this offer, with newspapers and travel glossies picking up the offer and creating excitement about it.

Unable to find any details of this very generous offer online, I reached out to my travel agent, who passed me on the details. As it turns out, there is no buy-one-get-one-free going on here for flight tickets. Instead, SriLankan Airlines is pitching their holiday packages to people, where the second passenger has to pay only for flight tickets. (No free air tickets, I told you!)

Also, the package has to be booked for a minimum of 3 nights/ 4 days, and you have to book it a minimum of a week before departure.  He sent me a sample of the ‘packages’ they were sent to offer, with economy class tickets ex-Chennai, as an example.

SriLankan Airlines Offer

I dug up the SriLankan Holidays website and found out more about the offer.

So, essentially no one I asked (including other travel agents) know about SriLankan Airlines’ Buy-1-Get-1-Free promotion at all.

Bottomline

Unlike SriLankan Airlines’ claim all over social media, there is no promotion ongoing to the best of what we could dig deep about where SriLankan Airlines was offering ‘free’ tickets for the second person.

Have you heard of or booked with this SriLankan Airlines offer of 2-for-1 tickets? Because I’d love to get in too on the promotion, and no one I know seems to know of these tickets.

(P.S.: If someone wants to still book this up and needs a travel agent, DM me and I’ll send you along the contact of mine!)
