I just signed up for the InterContinental Ambassador programme, and in the process, extended my IHG One Rewards Diamond status by a year. You can do it too, and that is why, this post.

IHG One Diamond Status

Earlier this year, IHG One, IHG’s loyalty programme, dished out the Diamond Elite status to everyone who bothered to sign up within that short window of time. The status was valid for three months, through December 2022, and much like everyone, I signed up for it too.

IHG Diamond Elite basically offers you free breakfast (for two) and 100% points when you have a paid stay at an IHG Hotel.

Extend IHG Diamond Elite with InterContinental Ambassador

InterContinental Ambassador is a paid membership programme (it costs USD 200 or 40,000 IHG points per annum to sign up or renew), and it offers extra perks at InterContinental hotels and resorts. One of the interesting aspects, however, is that signing up for the Ambassador status, renews top tier status by a year. Remember, this is not published, but it has worked for many people, yours truly included, and hence, the post.

Enrolling for IHG Ambassador membership, ordinarily, helps you get Platinum Elite status, but those who have Diamond Elite status, are consistently reporting a renewal of their IHG Diamond Elite status. As you would see above, the date got extended as soon as I signed up.

Why do it?

IHG recently updated their rewards programme to launch IHG One Diamond Elite Status, which includes free breakfast, 100% bonus points. InterContinental Ambassador membership pays for itself when you sign up, as you get one free weekend night (one one paid night) at an InterContinental property, apart from a USD 20 credit per stay and a guaranteed upgrade on every stay at an InterContinental property.

Additionally, the second reason to enrol for InterContinental Ambassador right now is the InterContinental Ambassador enrolment offer, where you can earn 20,000 points bonus when you enrol by December 31, 2022 and stay for two Qualifying nights at select properties by January 31, 2023. So, with that, one is getting a big bunch of points, and that is a good way to get your points back. A Qualifying Stay is defined as a minimum 1-night stay booked under a Qualifying Rate, with total spend exceeding USD 30 (or local equivalent) per night.

Bottomline

It’s possible for existing IHG Diamond Elite members to extend their status by a year when enrolling or renewing for an  InterContinental Ambassador membership, that costs USD200 or 40,000 IHG points.  Many folks picked up a trial IHG Diamond status in October 2022, and they can now have it through December 31, 2023 by signing up for InterContinental Ambassador status. Additionally, when they stay two nights by January 31, 2023 at InterContinental or certain other brands, they also get 20,000 IHG points.
