Farnborough Airshow: Qatar Airways places order for 20 additional Boeing 777X Jets

Qatar Airways is the launch customer for the Boeing 777X, Boeing’s largest passenger aircraft. The aircraft is currently undergoing the certification process and is expected to be delivered to customers in 2025. The airline has the passenger version and also became the launch customer of the freighter version in 2022.

On the second day of the Farnborough International Airshow 2024, Qatar Airways announced that its order of Boeing 777X aircraft had been expanded to include an additional 20 Boeing 777-9. This is in addition to its existing order of 40 Boeing 777-9 commercial aircraft, bringing the total to 94 commercial and cargo variants of Boeing 777X aircraft.

Boeing and Qatar Airways announced today the Middle Eastern airline placed an order for 20 more 777-9 airplanes, which expands the carrier’s 777X order book to nearly 100 airplanes. The order was finalised this year and listed as unidentified on Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries website.

In 2022, Qatar Airways had an outstanding order of up to 60 of the passenger variants of the Boeing 777X, including 50 Boeing 777-9 aircraft and 10 Boeing 777-8 aircraft. Twenty of those orders were converted to freighter variants. So now, Qatar Airways is back to having 60 777-9 aircraft (passenger version) on order. This new order of 20 aircraft was finalised this year and listed as unidentified on Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries website.

The announcement also includes a commitment for 40 additional GE9X and spare engines and a long-term services agreement. Qatar Airways unveiled the new iteration of the Qsuite, which will be first launched on the Boeing 777X.

On this occasion, Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, said,

Qatar Airways is proud to announce an expansion to the existing Boeing 777X aircraft order with an additional 20, totalling 94 Boeing 777X aircraft. Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Stephanie Pope said,

Qatar Airways is a leader in our industry, and we are honored the airline added 20 more 777-9 jets to its large Boeing order book. We appreciate their confidence that Boeing’s market-leading widebody family will provide outstanding fuel efficiency and a superior passenger experience for its global operations.

Bottomline

Qatar Airways has just placed a new order for the Boeing 777X aircraft, bringing up its total order for passenger Boeing 777Xs to 60, apart from 34 of the freighter variant on order. The aircraft will be the new flagship for Qatar Airways and will have a new business-class product for the airline when it arrives in the fleet.
