Lufthansa had to stop flights to India after the closure of Indian borders at the start of the CoronaVirus Pandemic. Since then, Lufthansa operated a few relief flights from various stations in India. Lufthansa has been operating frequent cargo flights ever since.
Now, Lufthansa will recommence direct relief flights from India to Munich/Frankfurt under a bilateral arrangement with the Indian government from August 13, 2020. The airline will operate from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru to Germany. The Germany-India operations will start on August 13, 2020, onwards.
At present, the following people are eligible to fly:
- Into India:
- All Indian Nationals
- EU Nationals, EU-residents, holders of EEA family member cards holding an applicable visa
- OCI cardholders, if
- Minor children with Indian parents
- Reason for travel is a family emergency like critical medical conditions of immediate family members or death.
- Married to an Indian national
- Students with at least one of their parents is an Indian citizen or an OCI cardholder.
- Other OCI Cardholders
- Foreign Nationals holding an applicable visa
- Out of India
- All EU Nationals & Residents of EU
- All other Foreign Nationals and/or the spouse/children of such persons whether accompanying or otherwise. Indian Nationals holding US green cards, Canadian Permanent Residence status or any other eligible visa are permitted on this select relief flight if he/she is a spouse of a foreign national.
- Permanent Residence Permit holders for all third countries (including US Green Cards Holders and Canadian PR Holders) with no immediate family connection (for this purpose, only spouse is considered an immediate family connection) are currently not included in the eligibility criteria.
- Seamen of any nationality including Indian Seamen subject to clearance from the Ministry of Shipping
- All Indian Nationals destined for EU such as
- Students on Long Term Category “D” visa issued for study purpose travelling directly to the country of visa issuance as long as the studies cannot be carried out entirely abroad**
- Students on Long Term Category D visa issued by the German Embassy for study purpose with destination Germany. **
** Travel on Long term category D visa for study purpose is valid as long as the studies cannot be carried out completely abroad. Students must present a certificate issued by their EU university, that their physical presence in the respective Schengen Country is necessary to Border Police in Frankfurt/Munich. - Family reunion visa (Category “D”)
- Long-term (Category “D”) visa for employment in health and health research sectors, for the care of the elderly as well as specialists and highly qualified workers whose employment is economically necessary and whose work cannot be postponed or carried out abroad
- or any other category that may be allowed by the EU Destination Country and permitted to transit via Frankfurt or Munich

My daughter is doing her masters in Spain. Student visa type D. She hopes to come to Kerala for vacation in December. Will she be able to travel to India via Frankafurt, since no air bubble arrangements there with Spain and India. ?
Do note, if final destination is US, you can’t transit via Europe.
@Venkatesh, for which passports? I know of someone on a US Passport + OCI who did just that end of July.
