IndiGo schedules reveal a move to Terminal 1 in Mumbai and Delhi Airport as of March 28, 2021

Since the revival of domestic air travel in India May 2020 onwards, at major airports such as Mumbai and Delhi, airlines have been operating from a singular airport terminal rather than from the usually allocated terminals pre-pandemic. I gather this was done because, with reduced traffic, it made no sense to operate two terminals and hence the no-frill airlines were also allowed to move into the premium terminals (T2 Mumbai and T3 Delhi).

However, don’t get used to the premium facilities folks. If IndiGo’s schedules are any indication, March 28 onwards, India’s largest airline, and a no-frills carrier at heart, IndiGo, plans to get back to their operations’ original terminal. Here is a screenshot of the Mumbai – Delhi flights as of March 26, 2021, where IndiGo is operating flights from T2 in Mumbai and T3 in Delhi.

However, on March 28, 2021, and onwards, many IndiGo flights are now listing on Terminal 1 in Mumbai. Remember, pre-pandemic, IndiGo used to operate flights from a mix of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 in Mumbai. Here is an example.

From the grapevine, I hear Mumbai is considering reopening T1 in Mumbai at some point in early March 2021, so this looks like an entirely workable proposition for them. On the other hand, I don’t see this on the GoAir and SpiceJet website. This move might also help IndiGo corner a larger part of the capacity at Terminal 1 with GoAir and SpiceJet not in the picture.

But on the other hand, IndiGo has also started to list that they are operating from Terminal 1 in Delhi from the switchover date for Summer 2021.

I am not sure if Delhi Airport Terminal 1 is ready for a move after the project to expand it was initiated in 2018 by the DIAL. On the other hand, Delhi is already operating Terminal 3 (Domestic and International) and has expanded to Terminal 2.

IndiGo seems to be preparing for a move to a distributed operation in Delhi and Mumbai airports again, just like the pre-pandemic times. To this effect, while there is no official announcement yet, apart from the information published on their website if you are booking a flight on IndiGo with connections April 2021 onwards, just be aware of this little detail to make your journey smoother that there may be a possibility of change of terminals.

Do you have any travel booked on IndiGo via Mumbai or Delhi April 2021 onwards and have you received any messages about a change of terminal yet?
