Central Asia has been the unexplored bastion for Indian carriers for a long time, and with IndiGo’s new strategy kicking in to connect international destinations to India, they are now going to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, both parts of the erstwhile USSR.

IndiGo’s August 2023 new launches

IndiGo has, in quick succession, already launched flights to the following destinations in August 2023:

• Daily Direct flights between Mumbai and Nairobi, Kenya starting August 5, 2023 (27th International destination)
• Daily Direct flights between Mumbai and Jakarta, Indonesia starting August 7, 2023 (28th International destination)
• 3X weekly flights between Delhi and Tbilisi, Georgia beginning August 8, 2023 (29th International destination)
• 4X weekly flights between Delhi and Baku, Azerbaijan beginning August 11, 2023 (30th International destination)

IndiGo to fly to Uzbekistan in September 2023

IndiGo is foraying into Central Asia as it announces the launch of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, as its 31st international and 110th overall destination. Commencing September 22, 2023, IndiGo will operate four weekly non-stop flights between Delhi and Tashkent. Here is the flight schedule. Flights will be operated with an A320neo aircraft.

Currently, no Indian carrier operates on this route. However, from Uzbekistan, Uzbekistan Airlines operates 5x weekly flights to Delhi using a mix of the A320/A321neo.

IndiGo to fly to Kazakhstan in September 2023

Almaty will be IndiGo’s 32nd international destination and the 111th overall station within the 6E network. Introducing this new route aims to improve India’s connectivity to Kazakhstan, renowned as Central Asia’s prominent financial centre. IndiGo will operate three times a week between Delhi and Almaty. Here is the flight schedule. Flights will be operated with an A320neo aircraft.

As you can see, both flights will use one aircraft, and until the route matures, alternate flights have been allocated with one airframe.

Bottomline

IndiGo is expanding into Central Asia, with flights to Azerbaijan and Georgia already launched and flights to Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to be launched in September 2023. These will form some of the subsequent growth bets for IndiGo which wants to go to new frontiers under its strategy for growth.
