IndiGo, Air India and Air India Express add flights to Prayagraj and Varanasi for Maha Kumbh

The Maha Kumbh is currently held in Praygraj (Allahabad) in Uttar Pradesh and will continue until February 26, 2025. However, the demand for tickets has been tough on the pockets of those trying to get them, given that the supply is limited. Airlines, of course, cannot operate flights at a loss, so prices are high. But now, there might be a solution, given that airlines are temporarily adding more flights.

IndiGo adds new flights to Prayagraj.

IndiGo has further increased its flights and seat capacity significantly to/from Prayagraj Airport during the period in which the city hosts the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, which commenced on January 13, 2025, and will continue until February 26, 2025. Initially, IndiGo had already planned a significant capacity increase; however, given the unprecedented demand for air travel on the Prayagraj route, more flights have been added recently. For this extraordinary period, the airline will now operate more than 165,000 seats to/from Prayagraj, which is more than double its standard capacity to the airport.

During this period, IndiGo will connect Prayagraj to 10 locations in India, adding connectivity from Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Jaipur, in addition to existing connectivity from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Raipur, and Bhubaneswar. Additionally, the airline has increased capacity deployed on existing routes to/from Prayagraj by increasing the frequency and operations of its larger aircraft, the A321. The airline will operate around 900 flights to/from the city, up from 490 regular services.

In addition to the additional capacity that the airline has already activated, it is working on reallocating capacity from other parts of its network to add more flights to accommodate the influx of passengers. The airline has also ensured that airfares are stabilised and is committed to providing the best possible travel experience to all its customers.

Air India adds flights to Prayagraj.

Air India has added more flights to Prayagraj in response to the high demand for travel during Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, having recently inaugurated special daily flights between Delhi and Prayagraj.

Effective February 1, 2025, Air India will operate a second daily service between Delhi and Prayagraj until February 28, 2025. It has also added special daily services between Mumbai and Prayagraj that will also operate until February 28, 2025. With these additions, Air India will operate 21x weekly flights to Prayagraj during the world’s largest spiritual gathering.

Air India Express adds flights to Varanasi.

Air India Express is expanding its network to Varanasi with new and enhanced connections. The airline will commence daily direct flights between Delhi and Varanasi from February 5, 2025. Additionally, Bengaluru–Varanasi flights will increase from three to four per day, while Hyderabad–Varanasi, which already operates daily, will see the addition of thirty more flights in February and March, providing more travel options for pilgrims and visitors.

Here are the details of the new flights.

Bottomline

IndiGo, Air India and Air India Express are adding flights to Praygraj and other neighbouring airports to address the vast opportunity created by the Mahakubh 2025. While IndiGo and Air India will service many flights to Prayagraj and IndiGo will operate its A321s to the airport, Air India Express is heading 130 km away to Varanasi.

What do you think? Will these new flights reduce the prices for those who want to head to Mahakumbh?
