Earlier this year, Hilton was offering 80% bonus on points purchased. Now HHonors is back with a 100% bonus promotion through June 3, 2016.
HHonors points are priced at 10 USD for every 1000 points and through this promotion you can purchase a maximum of 80,000 HHonors points, that means the highest number of points you can earn through purchase are 160,000 at a cost of 800 USD, thus cost of 1 Hhonors point equals 0.5 cents (approximately INR 0.35)
HHonors reward redemptions begin at 5,000 points and go all the way up to 95,000 points. One of Hilton’s most coveted property, The Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is selling for 950 USD per night in December peak season while a night’s redemption costs 95,000 HHonors points . Therefore buying 95,000 HHonors points will cost you 475 USD which exactly half of the 950 USD quoted price.
As a cherry on top if you have a Hilton elite status and stay for five nights on points, the fifth night becomes free which further brings down the redemption cost to 76,000 HHonors points per night, hence cost per night is further reduced to 380 USD per night. Now that’s a steal deal !
On the other end of the spectrum, the Hilton Agra, a category 2 hotel is up for redemption for 10,000 Hhonors points. 10,000 HHonors points will cost 50 USD / 3,350 INR, whereas the standard rates at the hotel are quoted all the way from 4,500 INR to 6,750 INR. Hence, it seems there is value in this point purchase promotion.
To gain a better understanding whether, I decided to check the HHonors redemption against price quotes at 11 other hotels worldwide through various categories and while redemption makes sense at some hotels, buying points randomly without thinking about where you would like use them may not be the best thing to do. Out of my sample of 11 hotels only 3 hotels in Thailand and Tokyo stand to gain with the Hhonors redemption under this purchase promotion.
Bottomline:
If you have been thinking about buying Hilton HHonors, now is a good time to do so. 100% bonus points is by far the best purchase promotion that Hilton offers and with this redemption you are only paying 0.5 cents per point. And although there is value to be had at both ends of the spectrum, keep in mind which Hilton hotels you would like make use of the redemption as at some hotels booking a room at cash price and earning Hhonors points might turn out to be a better option than redeeming points for a reward night.
