It has been roughly three weeks since IndiGo and Air India/ Air India Express decided to apply fuel surcharges to their tickets due to the Middle Eastern conflict and its impact on fuel prices. Now, there has been a hike.
IndiGo Fuel Surcharge went up
IndiGo revised the Fuel Charges on domestic and international routes for all new bookings, effective April 2, 2026.
IATA’s Jet Fuel Monitor indicated an over 130% increase in fuel prices for the region on a month-on-month comparison. However, in support of air travellers and the aviation industry, the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG) and the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) decided to implement only a partial, staggered 25% increase for domestic airlines. With this clarity, IndiGo also recalibrated its domestic Fuel Charge to vary with travel distance. All domestic bookings made from 0001 hrs on April 02, 2026, included the following revised fuel charges per sector.

For International Operations, ATF prices have more than doubled in the last month. All international bookings made from 0001 hrs on April 2, 2026 included the following revised fuel charges, per sector:

Air India / Express Implements Additional Fuel Surcharges as well.
Air India and Air India Express will also implement a similar higher surcharge that takes effect on April 8, 2026. Air India will also transition to a flat domestic surcharge to a distance‑based grid as follows, effective 08 April 2026 (including on Air India Express flights):

These are very similar to the surcharges on IndiGo. And the International flights will also get a graded fuel surcharge effective tomorrow for regional flights and effective April 10, 2026 for intercontinental flights:

For the avoidance of doubt, bookings made prior to the above times will not incur the new surcharge unless customers request date or itinerary changes that require a fare recalculation.

Bottomline
Air India and Air India Express are beginning to implement even higher fuel surcharges on domestic tickets due to the conflict in the Middle East. Not just that, they will also increase the fuel surcharge on tickets booked for international long-haul travel to Europe, North America / Australia. The changes are going live on a regional level today (for tickets booked from tomorrow onwards) and on a long- or ultra-long-haul level as well. However, if you have already booked your ticket, you won’t be charged extra.
