Finnair Plus to transition to Avios in 2024

Finnair Plus, the loyalty programme of Finnair, has announced changes to the programme taking place in 2024. This could be good news for some people, especially in India. Let’s take a look.

Finnair to overhaul frequent flyer programme.

Finnair today announced that it would completely revamp the Finnair Plus programme in 2024. Some of the actions that would be included in this revamp will consist of:

  • Finnair will move to Avios as its rewards currency, which British Airways, Iberia, Air Lingus, Qatar Airways, and Vueling already use.
  • Finnair will move to a revenue-based approach, awarding Avios and elite status based on how much you spend on tickets and ancillaries, compared to the current system of awarding miles on distance flown.
  • New benefits for the loyalty programme.
  • Commitment to increasing the number of “saver” award seats (4 on short-haul and 8 on long-haul flights)

While a whole bunch of things are unknown for now, the airline will move to Avios as its currency, and that is a good thing because that should also enable moving around Avios from other programmes such as BA, QR, and so on. Current points in the Finnair Plus programme will be converted to Avios in a 3:2 ratio when the transition is enabled.

While Finnair is not a big player on Indian routes, it does help that they move to Avios, given they are transfer partners with American Express in India, so that would make it one more way to earn Avios in India. Also, the programme has not been a serious player in loyalty with its bad redemption ratios, so I hope things only look up from here on.

Bottomline

Significant changes are coming to the Finnair Plus program as of 2024. Finnair will adopt Avios as its rewards currency and transition to a revenue-based earning programme. Finnair is also promising more award availability.

What do you think of these Finnair Plus changes?
