Etihad Brings First Class & Lie-Flat Business to All Mumbai and Delhi Flights from May 1, 2026

In the world of airline comebacks, one of the more fascinating ones has been the story of Etihad Airways. The airline has been doing some good stuff, such as resurrecting the A380s, and more recently, bringing in service the A321LR, which has First Class as well.

Etihad Airways to introduce A321LR on Delhi and Mumbai Routes

Etihad Airways is making one of its most significant cabin upgrades on the India routes in years. Effective May 1, 2026, all four daily flights between Abu Dhabi and Mumbai/New Delhi will offer fully lie-flat Business Class with direct-aisle access. Also, after a long time, on these short-haul Indian metro sectors, you’ll be able to book a true First Class Experience (Etihad used to offer the A380 on Mumbai flights back in the day, which had the Etihad First Apartments).

The upgrade comes from the airline’s new Airbus A321LR, which began service in July 2025 and will operate two of the four daily rotations to each city, complementing the existing twice-daily wide-body services on the A350, Boeing 777, and 787. Etihad had already inducted the A321LR on the Kolkata route in September 2025.

Until now, Etihad’s frequencies to Mumbai and Delhi were a mixed bag — some rotations operated by wide-body aircraft with the carrier’s flagship products, others by older narrow-body aircraft with recliner-style Business seats and streaming IFE that frequent flyers had long since stopped getting excited about. With the A321LR replacing those narrow-body rotations, the experience finally evens out across the schedule.

Here’s what guests will now get on every flight to and from Mumbai and Delhi:

  • First Class available on the two A321LR rotations per city (alongside the wide-bodies that already offer First on select services)
  • Lie-flat Business seats with direct aisle access on every single flight
  • High-speed Wi-Fi across all cabins on the A321LR
  • 4K touchscreens and a refreshed in-flight entertainment library spanning Bollywood and Hollywood

Arik De, Etihad’s Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, framed it as a statement of intent for the Indian market, where the airline now serves 11 gateways. He noted that guests can now enjoy “a true First experience throughout their entire journey” when connecting to cities such as London, Paris, Zurich, Geneva, New York, and Toronto. This was the original intention of equipping the A321LR with First Class.

The A321LR Experience

If you’ve flown Etihad’s A321LR to Kolkata — which has been the launch route for this aircraft — you already know what to expect. For everyone else, here’s what’s on board.

First Class

The A321LR features two First Suites at the very front of the aircraft. These are enclosed suites with sliding doors, designed for both privacy and the option to dine with a companion in the same suite. The seat converts into a fully flat bed with proper bedding, and entertainment is delivered on a generous 20-inch 4K screen with wireless charging and Bluetooth audio pairing built in.

Etihad First on the A321LR

For a roughly 3-hour sector to Mumbai or Delhi, this is genuinely overkill in the best possible way — and for those connecting beyond Abu Dhabi to long-haul destinations, it means a consistent First experience door to door.

Business Class

The Business cabin on the A321LR has 14 lie-flat seats, all window-facing and all with direct aisle access. This is the same general philosophy as Etihad’s wide-body Business product — no climbing over a sleeping seatmate, proper privacy, and a flat bed even on a short hop.

Economy

There are 144 Economy seats on the A321LR, with 4K touchscreens at every seat. Etihad has been making a point of stocking the in-flight entertainment with a strong Indian content library, which should land well with the home market.

Ground Experience

This upgrade isn’t just about what’s in the air. First Deluxe and Business Deluxe guests get the door-to-door chauffeur service Etihad is long known for. First Deluxe customers also get the Etihad Concierge — a personal travel assistant — and Meet & Assist at the airport.

For premium leisure travellers heading from India to Europe or North America, this is the kind of seamless ground-to-air-to-ground choreography that has historically been a strength of Gulf carriers.

New Mumbai Schedule (from 1 May 2026)

All flights operate daily.

New Delhi Schedule (from 1 May 2026)

All flights operate daily.

Bottomline

This is a meaningful upgrade for Indian travellers, and arguably overdue. Until now, Etihad’s hard product to Mumbai and Delhi varied widely depending on which flight you booked, with some rotations offering the kind of premium experience you’d expect from a Gulf carrier and others falling well short. From May 1, that inconsistency goes away.

The headline is the introduction of First Class on a narrow-body to India — something that puts Etihad in rare company on these routes. But the real day-to-day win for most premium travellers is the guarantee of a lie-flat, aisle-access Business seat on every single flight, regardless of which departure time fits their schedule. For frequent flyers connecting through Abu Dhabi to Europe, the UK or North America, this finally makes the entire journey feel premium end-to-end.

If you’ve been holding off on booking an Etihad premium cabin to or from India because you weren’t sure which seat you’d get, that uncertainty is now gone.
