Emirates baggage allowance being cut down from February 4

Emirates, India’s unofficial national carrier, is going to have some reason to weep for many of their Economy Class flyers in the coming weeks. People used to love Emirates for their generous passenger experience, including generous meals and a generous baggage allowance, apart from a generous network. That might be changing in the days ahead. Emirates has already made some changes to perks offered to award redemptions. This morning, I was on the Emirates Baggage Allowance calculator and saw things going off.

It turns out, this morning, Emirates has announced a change to their baggage allowance, which will come into effect for tickets issued from February 4, 2019.

Emirates sells Economy class tickets in four fare families: Special, Saver, Flex and Flex Plus. From February 4, 2019, Special and Saver tickets will see their baggage allowance go down by 5 kg each. The new baggage allowance will be:

  • Special: 20 Kg (tickets issued before February 4) | 15 Kg (tickets issued after February 4)
  • Saver: 25 Kg (tickets issued before February 4) | 20 Kg (tickets issued after February 4)
  • Flex: 30 Kg
  • Flex Plus: 35 Kg

Here is a screenshot of the Emirates website which talks about the new baggage allowance going into effect.

For those travelling to and from the Americas, where the piece concept applies, the Special fare will now only get 1 piece instead of two, again, for those when the tickets are booked on February 4, 2019.

Of course, if you are an Emirates Skywards member, you will get your elite baggage allowance on top of the regular baggage as well.

Bottomline

Clearly, the winds of change are even coming to the global bigwig Emirates, and for those who are already ticketed, it should not be a problem at all. However, going forward, a lesser baggage allowance will be the reality, and this means the days of low fares and not paying for extras is over. Watch out for more changes coming in the months ahead.

What do you think of the changes to the Emirates Baggage Allowance in the coming days?

  1. I fly regular from Birmingham to dubai and used to enjoy the 30kg.
New rules slash baggage to 15kg.

I won’t be flying emirates again.

  2. A 15 kilo luggage allowance on a return ticket Athens Bangkok hardly a weekend away on a budget airline is completely unrealistic. Pity really since I always enjoyed flying with Emirates not anymore though.

  3. Thats what happens when you buy bunch of A-380s an there profits are nose diving for last two years ; i can tell you more changes are coming to Emirates. An from India perspective there are so many airlines giving direct flight to there countries; thats a bitter pill for all the major gulf airlines. Have a good one!!!
