Earn up to 10X Membership Rewards points on Vouchers Purchased with American Express Cards

American Express has been doubling down on the Membership Rewards’ Rewards Multiplier feature since its launch in 2020. The attempt is to bring more focus on the rewards currency of American Express, which is Membership Rewards. When you route  your purchases via this portal, you earn MR points depending on the card you put your purchase on, as follows:

  • American Express Centurion Card: 10X MR points
  • American Express Platinum Card: 5X MR points
  • American Express Platinum Reserve Card: 3X MR points
  • American Express Platinum Travel Card: 3X MR points
  • American Express Gold Card: 2X MR points
  • American Express Membership Rewards Credit Card: 2X MR points
  • American Express SmartEarn Credit Card: 2X MR points

As I recently noted, American Express started to offer 5X points on the Gold Card recently.

Purchase vouchers for over 150 brands and earn MR points now via Rewards Multiplier

Another new feature added by American Express for the Rewards Multiplier portal has been the addition of the ability to buy vouchers via the portal now, a-la HDFC Bank Smartbuy.

Since American Express has partnered with Gyftr, the e-voucher issuance company which is also used by HDFC Smartbuy, the assortment of brands is the same, or in fact better. Not just that, your points multiplier posts in 5 days, which is much faster than the points multiplier posting in up to 120 working days for other purchases. Just one thing to remember, the maximum number of Bonus MR Points that could be earned by you would be capped at  25,000 Bonus MR Points  per month via Rewards Multiplier.

Here are the currently available brands on the American Express Rewards Multiplier portal for voucher purchases:

  • 1mg Prescription Medicine

As you would note, there are certain prominent B2C brands here, such as Uber etc. which are not even around on the Smartbuy portal for a purchase. Another thing to note is the fact that the points are posting as per the 5-day timeline as being announced by Amex and many people have reported this to be correct.

Bottomline

American Express has launched the ability to purchase vouchers via their own Rewards Multiplier portal in July 2021, which could get you up to 5X more points for the purchase, (and 10X for Centurion cardmembers). There are over 150 brands on offer, including prominent day-to-day brands such as Swiggy, Uber and Amazon. The points post within a week as well.

What do you think of the new addition to the American Express Rewards Multiplier portal to buy vouchers, and what are some creative uses you have in mind for this proposition?

  1. Cant see amazon gift vouchers now . Looks like already exhausted 😀 They may introduce limits from next month !

  2. This is a great offer. When will Amex be allowed to start issuing cards in India again? Any inside info?

  3. Hi Ajay & Everyone , Please confirm the procedure for below scenario .

Can i go to Amazon via amex reward multiplier route and then buy Amazon voucher and then use the same voucher to pay my Electricity bill via Amazon Pay ??

      • I think this would not be counted for Multiplier
Since the Site mentions these Exceptions, pls look into the T&C in detail before making the transaction

Excluding: Amazon Pay balance, Bill Payments, Gift Cards, Select mobile phones and others. Refer T&C’s for details*

        • @Nitesh, that works for when you go for product purchases via the Rewards Multiplier. When you go to Gyftr via Amex Rewards Multiplier, you will be able to get the bonuses and use the money as regular Amazon Pay uses.

          • Agreed with Ajay. The Gyftr route will work, though Amazon has a limit of INR 10k for for electricity and utility bills through Amazon Pay. Anything above that needs to be a UPI payment.
Last month my bill was 11,200. I paid 1,200 on Adani’s website using my Regalia, and balance 10k 3 days later using the gift cards.

            • Hello Mika,
I have MRCC. If I buy Amazon voucher via Amex-Gyftr site, then I will be getting 2X points. Is my understanding correct? If Yes, also let me know whether or not this is a one-time-benefit only.

  4. Is there any ceiling for any particular brand (a la amazon/flipkart capped at Rs 5K each on HDFC Smartbuy)

      • Agreed. Bought the Amazon Pay vouchers from the Gyftr website worth 50k (didn’t try to add more) and paid Insurance premium on Amazon using the Amazon Pay Balance. (insurance provider was Aditya Birla Sunlife Insurance)

  5. Thanks for the detailed post… So the offer will max out for Platinum Charge card at Rs 2.5 L purchases. Correct?
