American Express offering 10 Membership Rewards points/INR 100 on utility bills to select customers

When it comes to the lockdown spending promotions, American Express has been ahead of the curve, making it a point to engage with their cardmembers via various promotions such as the double points on Platinum tier credit cards and every day spend offer and Double Points offer for most cardmembers. As people move to work from home, American Express has moved into one more category to make sure the Amex cards are preferred currency for payments. This time, it is Utilities. Here are the details of a new American Express Utilities offer being rolled out.

American Express offering up to 5000 Membership Rewards points per month for Utility payments

Under the new Amex promotion,  which has been rolled out to a select set of customers, American Express is offering the following set of cardmembers 10 Membership Rewards points per INR 100 spent to the following cardmembers:

  • American Express Platinum Reserve Credit Card
  • American Express Platinum Travel Credit Card
  • American Express Gold Card
  • American Express Membership Rewards Credit Card
  • American Express SmartEarn Credit Card
  • Air India American Express Gold Card
  • American Express Green Card
  • American Express Gold Credit Card
  • RPM Credit Card from American Express & HPCL

These cardmembers can earn up to 5,000 Membership Rewards Points per month for three months, starting from July 1 to September 30, 2021, for paying their utility bills with their Amex cards. You need to be targetted for the American Express Utilities offer. Different versions have been rolled out to different cardmembers. For instance, this is the 6,000 points version rolled out to one of our readers. On the other hand, Shipra has been rolled out a 15,000 Membership Rewards version (up to 5000 MR per month)

American Express Utilities

You get 10 Membership Rewards Points/ INR 100 spent on utility transactions on the enrolled card, including supplementary cards and no minimum spend requirement. Per month, a maximum of 5,000 bonus MR can be earned via this promotion, for a total of up to 15,000 MR during the promotion period. This means the promotion maxes out at INR 20,000 spend on utility spends per month for those who got the 6000 points version and INR 50,000 spend for those who got the 15,000 version. Full T&C Here.

Usually, Amex does not offer any points for spends on Utilities (Electricity, Water & Gas bills and so on). To be able to get these points, you will need to pay your bills directly and not via an aggregator such as PayTM or Amazon Pay since wallet payments won’t be eligible for Membership Rewards under the offer. Membership Rewards Points will be credited to Cardmember’s account within 90 days after the calendar month in which eligible spends under the offer have been made.

Bottomline

This is a great promotion from American Express, yet again. It seems American Express is working in overdrive at the moment to engage with customers and keep them happy, while other banks are just sleeping at the wheel at least with respect to Credit Card spends and engagement. With the utility segment, Amex has an opportunity to find a foothold in a space where large utility bills are a norm due to work from home these days.

What do you think of the new American Express promotion for utilities?

  1. Hello Ajay,
Thanks for sharing the offer details. I hold a MRCC card. Just wanted to check with you, if I use it for paying my electricity bill of say Rs. 1600 directly on the MSEDCL website or directly by card through Amazon. In this case,
    1) Will I get 160 bonus points under the offer?
    2) Will it count as 1 of the 4 monthly transactions of Rs. 1,500 to qualify for 1000 monthly bonus points?
    3) Will it count towards the monthly aggregate spend of Rs. 20,000 to qualify for 1000 monthly bonus points?
    4) There will be no regular reward points (1 reward point for every Rs. 50 spent) as they don’t qualify for utility bill payment

Request you to please let me know if my above understanding is correct
    Thanks in advance
    Gopal Gidwani

  2. Amex is giving me almost all offers that I see on your posts 🙂
Got this offer on 2nd July only
Also I got a conditional LE from 2.05 lakhs to 4 lakhs 😀

      • This works well. I have used it to top up my Amazon Pay balance using my AMEX Gold, got the 5x points in 5 days.

    • Just checked the reward multiplier website. Have to say it is way better than hdfc smartbuy in terms of design and ease of use.

    • @Ajay
If someone has a HDFC Diners Black credit card and is using HDFC SmartBuy to purchase gift vouchers and getting 33% reward rate, is there any justified reason on why he/she should use AMEX MRCC on AMEX Reward Multplier to purchase gift vouchers?

I mean to ask under which scenario will MRCC (used for gift vouchers on Reward Multiplier platform) give better reward rate / returns than HDFC Diners Black on HDFC SmartBuy platform for purchase of gift vouchers?

      • I would use the AMEX one to complete my 6 transactions of 1000 on Gold or 4 transactions of 1500 on MRCC.

      • I used it for BigBasket GVs which I am not able to buy on Smartbuy. So 12.5 MR points / 100 Rs is a better deal than other options.

But for other vouchers Smartbuy is the winner.
