American Express India is going to promote their online travel booking capabilities these days. A new promotion a few days ago, where they started offering an extra 15,000 INR Taj Voucher for those who book a big trip (flight/hotels/package) via the website. Now, they are keen to show off the feature which enables you to use your Membership Rewards points to pay for trips.
Amex launches 30% MR back promotion
American Express has launched a new promotion, where they are promising to return 30% of your Membership Rewards points back to you if you use them on the Amex Travel website to book your travel (flights and hotels).
The offer runs through August 31, 2023, for the following cardmembers:
- American Express Platinum Card
- American Express Platinum Reserve Credit Card
- American Express Gold Card
- American Express Membership Rewards Credit Card
For general use purposes, American Express offers the value of 25 paise (INR 0.25) per Membership Rewards point when used for pay with points. For instance, I picked up the option on a random ticket from the website.
Usually, I wouldn’t advise using Membership Rewards points on swapping for cash since American Express has some great partnerships where you can transfer the points instead. However, if you do so, you get 30% points back, increasing the value per MR point for travel bookings to 35 paise (INR 0.35) from 25 paise (INR 0.25).
Per Amex, you should have received a message (email) from American Express to qualify for the promotion. Under this exclusive offer, Platinum Cardmember can get 30% membership rewards Points Back on eligible redemption transactions done during the offer period on the American Express Travel website and via American Express Platinum Travel & Lifestyle Services. Other American Express Cardmembers (Platinum Reserve, Gold Card & Membership Rewards Credit Card) can get 30% membership rewards Points Back on eligible redemption transactions done during the offer period on the American Express Travel website only.
As mentioned earlier, the offer is valid on Flight and Hotel bookings. The offer can be availed on the multiple booking done during the offer period by a Cardmember. A minimum of 1,000 points need to be redeemed for the redemption process.
Cardmembers can earn up to 500,000 Membership Rewards Points for Flight and Hotel booking redemptions on eligible Basic American Express cards during the abovementioned offer period. This translates to a maximum redemption of 1,666,666 Membership Rewards Points which would be eligible to receive offer benefit (1,666,666 Points * 30% = 500,000 Points)
The offer is applicable only on redemptions of Membership Rewards Points on the American Express Travel website, where you may select the ‘Use Pay with Points’ option to pay for your charges and/or via American Express Platinum Travel & Lifestyle Services (for Platinum Cardmembers). Eligible Membership Rewards Points as Points Back will be credited by October 31, 2023.
Bottomline
A new American Express promotion offers to return 30% of the points you may use towards paying for a ticket or hotel stay when booked with Amex Platinum Travel services or Amex Travel Online. The promotion is valid for redemptions made through August 31, 2023. It temporarily takes up the value of per-point redemption as cash to 0.35 INR per MR.
