One of the unsung warriors of the Indian Credit Card industry has been the American Express SmartEarn Credit Card, the entry level product from the stable of American Express in India. The card provides some excellent opportunities to earn Membership Rewards points on the use with some preferred vendors.

Now, American Express has added some new benefits on the card. Here is the communication sent out.

Earlier on, American Express only used to provide 10X Membership Reward Points for purchases from Flipkart, but now they have added Amazon India to the mix as well. You can earn 10X points (1 point per INR 50 spent + 9 bonus points per INR 50 spent), and the bonus points will top off at INR 2777 per month between spends on Amazon and Flipkart.  You also get 10X Membership Rewards points on spending on Uber, but it is not included in this limit.

You can also earn 5X Membership Reward points (1 point per INR 50 spent + 4 bonus points per INR 50 spent) on various merchants, which now includes topping up your PayTM wallet. However, the total 5X bonus caps at 250 points per month, which is the equivalent of spends up to INR 3125. The following merchants attract 5X spends:

• Paytm Wallet
• Swiggy
• BookMyShow
• PVR
• Myntra
• Jabong
• Grofers
• Big Bazaar

Bottomline

This is great news for those who use the American Express Smart Earn CC. There are now more opportunities to earn Membership Rewards points at this entry level card, which can quickly be used to various reward options as well, including transfer to airline and hotel reward partners.
