Air India launching Delhi–Vienna route on 787s

Air India is working on launching a new route between Delhi to Vienna, three times a week on their Boeing 787 planes. This comes in the wake of Austrian Airlines deciding to discontinue their service from Delhi (7 days a week) as of April 5, 2016.

The new Air India service will be timed as follows:

AI135 DEL1400 – 1845VIE 788 357

AI136 VIE2245 – 0925+1DEL 788 357

Reservations for the new service are already open on the Air India website, and fares are quoting at INR 40,000 approximately for round trip travel in economy. Services will be operated on Wednesday, Friday & Sundays.

Air India has been deploying their 787s, just like most operators, to long-and-thin routes, where there is not enough traffic to justify a 350-pax seater, but enough to justify a 250-pax plane.

Air India will also need to work fast to get codeshares in place with Austrian Airlines, which is a fellow airline in the Star Alliance, so that they can take traffic further from India to Vienna, and from there to other destinations in Europe.

Here is hoping the route works out for them!
