Air India non-stop flights to Dallas and Los Angeles still planned for Winter 2025 schedule

Air India is the only Indian carrier that has non-stop flights to the United States. Air India operates the following flights between India and the US: Delhi – New York JFK/ Newark / Chicago / Washington DC and San Francisco, Mumbai – San Francisco / New York JFK / Newark and Bengaluru – San Francisco. American Airlines operates New York JFK – Delhi non-stop from the US side, and United operates Newark – Delhi. These are all the flights operating on the US – India route.

Air India is still planning non-stop flights to Dallas and Los Angeles.

Given the ongoing Russia—Ukraine War, many carriers are prohibited from using Russian Airspace for safety reasons or because they are banned from overflying Russia. Indian carriers are, however, allowed to use Russian airspace and do so all the time.

Now that Air India has deputed their A350-900 aircraft between Delhi – London Heathrow and is getting ready to induct the A350 between Delhi – New York JFK and Newark, the airline will have five Boeing 777-300ER and two Boeing 787-8 aircraft free up. Further, the Air India flight between Delhi and Washington DC will be upgraded to the 777 soon.  Some of these aircraft are supposed to enter the refurbishment process, but that will still mean that Air India will have spare aircraft.

Air India has been planning to launch more ultra-long-haul flights to the United States and is quietly laying the ground for expansion in the US. The airline has been hiring key staff in Dallas and Los Angeles, which are the airline’s next destinations in the US. The launch of these flights should happen in the Winter 2024 schedule, as we wrote about in August 2024. The Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, also visited India on India’s Republic Day in January 2024, likely solidifying the launch of this flight.

Given the vast Indian diaspora based in Dallas (and in the Dallas Fort Worth area as a whole), Dallas will become Air India’s first new destination in nine years after the airline launched flights to San Francisco in 2015. The flight would operate from Delhi using a Boeing 777 aircraft.

Over the past years, Dallas DFW Airport has seen around 950 people fly to or from India daily. The DFW metropolitan area is home to one of the largest Indian-American diaspora, and Emirates / Qatar Airways currently carry this traffic. Once it launches, Dallas will become Air India’s longest route from Delhi at 8,186 miles (15,160 kilometres).

According to the DGCA report of the Winter Schedule for 2024, the flight for Dallas is currently slotted to depart from Delhi at 04:00 AM. The slot is requested from December 1, 2024 onwards. For the return, the flight is slotted to return to Delhi at 02:40 PM.

After more aircraft are freed up in the coming months, Delhi—Los Angeles will serve the following route: Air India used to serve Los Angeles one-stop in 2008 via Frankfurt using the Boeing 747-400. Flights to Seattle could follow later in 2025. American Airlines had announced a new nonstop route from Seattle to Bengaluru in 2020, but that flight never materialised.

The flight for Los Angeles is currently slotted to depart from Delhi at 05:00 AM. The slot is requested from December 1, 2024 onwards. For the return, the flight is slotted to return to Delhi at 01:55 PM.

All three points (Los Angeles, Seattle, and Dallas-Fort Worth) are among Delhi’s top five unserved markets in North America. The other two are in Canada.

Bottomline

While Air India has yet to make an official announcement, now that the equipment is being freed up, the airline will most likely head to Dallas Fort Worth later this year, followed by flights to Los Angeles in the Northern Winter Schedule of 2024. This puts Air India in a commanding lead to fly between India and the United States, with no other airline serving so many points in the US.

What do you think of Air India’s planned expansion to the United States?

  1. Flights are approved but does any one know when will Air India start the sale of the tickets or when will Air India themselves make an official announcement. I thought AI would have already planned out everything since its been in woks for long time instead of deciding now when to start the sale of the tickets. Looks like flight schedule shows other flights approved too including from Mumbai to Phuket. So lot of new routes.

    • Hi Sam, Perhaps Air India can only officially (safely) sell tickets once they are absolutely sure that the refurbished wide body aircraft are ready or more of the new A350’s are delivered as per delivery schedule.
      Jigsaw puzzle of sorts ?

  2. Going forward, will Air India commence LAX, DFW to BOM ?
Seems to be alot of emphasis on DEL.
Once the upcoming Navi Mumbai Airport [NMI] is operational, this should free up slots at BOM.

    • While this is good and welcome news that the airline is expanding into DFW and LAX, there is something to be said about the focus of the airline..

As someone who is based out of BOM I say this: on the topic of BOM vs DEL – airlines will expand where growth is visible and that is DEL over BOM..

Even 25 years ago, DEL was the primary port for international travel for India..

It’s equally premium segment heavy as BOM and serves as the gateway for a large(r) population.. Simple.

Delhi provides a greater selection of airlines and flight options for International Travel..

BOM has options but DEL just has more, even without considering AI..

Passenger figures – discount AI if desired – reflect that..

It’s not ideal for those who live in BOM or PUNE, but DEL continues to be the gateway to India and will probably always be so, regional biases aside..

  3. The India US aviation market has significant promise. With c 150k new Indian students each year that translates to 300k additional round trips when parents start visiting and 600k round trips when the students [now workers] acquire partners and c 900k additional round trips when they start families in say 8 years time. it starts waning thereafter due to parents likely becoming less mobile and families less likely to make the annual migratory trip as kids grow but lets remember there is a steady stream of INCREMENAL 150k students each year who will keep this demand going for decades to come!.

There is room for everyone. The premium middleast based carriers, the more legacy Europe based ones, the old school US based careers, AirIndia and perhaps a few budget / express long haul services from India based airlines too!’

Wonder which other US cities they believe have the promise for non stop services from India. Often arriving at Boston Logan in the early afternoon, I notice there are Indian origin students, young professionals, parents etc in Q at the immigration from as many as 8 transatlantic arrivals in the 2-3 hour interval before tea time!
