Air India offering free J ticket for F/J travellers on DEL-SFO

Air India is pumping its domestic muscle to get international occupancy. A few days ago, Air India announced a flight between Delhi – San Francisco, which will commence operations from December 2, 2015.

To help fill up the premium cabins on this plane, Air India is now running a promotion where a round trip flight on the Business or First Class cabin of DEL-SFO will get you a free round-trip business class ticket on any of Air India’s domestic sectors.

As per the promotion which was published on Air India’s website on October 1, 2015:

Air India will give an inaugural offer exclusively for its First and Business Class passengers who would be travelling on the soon to be launched direct flight to San Francisco from Delhi .

Under the scheme, any First or Business Class passenger travelling to and fro on Air India’s direct flight from Delhi to San Francisco shall be entitled to one Return Ticket (2 Flight Coupons) in Executive class on Air India’s domestic network. The fare and Airline Fuel Charge will be waived on the complementary award ticket. Applicable taxes will be paid by the passenger. The passenger may also give the award ticket to any of his nominee.

The offer is available on tickets booked between October 1, 2015 and January 15, 2016 which can be availed on travel between December 2, 2015 and January 31, 2016.

My past reading of these offers means that you can’t really be gaming this system, i.e., buy the F/J ticket and refund it after receiving the free ticket. While details are not published here, you’d usually be required to submit boarding passes to get your free ticket issued.

Anybody planning to fly this route and wanting to write me a trip report? 🙂

  1. the other problem with this flight is the timings are not that great. 02:45 departure from delhi is ok.. 11 PM like United would be better.

Perhaps if they had a 10/11 PM departure from SFO that would have been most ideal. However that would mean a 3 PM departure from India.

  2. I’d love to fly this route in J. UA and lifemiles charge around 80k one way for J but no YQ. AI has outrageous YQ so i don’t think i would want to use any other airline to book those awards
