Air India double miles on select routes in India and free tickets offer

Air India has launched its annual double miles promotion and is offering 2x of base miles on select routes and flights between 20th July 2012 and 30th September 2012. Since this list is not published on the website, I’m posting it here for your reference. Take note that only these specific flights attract double miles in the Flying Returns program, which is unlike other promos in FFPs on a route basis.

Air India is also running another promotion for frequent flyers, something they are advertising heavily in newspapers as well. Called the ‘Desh Videsh Offer’, it allows for frequent travellers on Air India to get free tickets on AI’s International network apart from earning mileage on the various sectors they travel on. The promotion is valid for travel during the period 20th July 2012 to 30th September 2012. Here are the details:

  • Travel on Air India Domestic network during the promo period for a value of Rs. 1,00,000/- (Total value of the ticket including Taxes): Eligible for 1 Economy class return international ticket (fuel surcharge and taxes to be borne by the passenger) on any AI International Sector.
  • Travel on Air India Domestic network during the promo period for a value of Rs. 1,50,000/- (Total value of the ticket including Taxes) and above would be eligible for 1 Economy class return international ticket (only Taxes to be borne by the passenger) on any of the sectors operated by Air India.
  • Travel on Air India Domestic network during the promo period for a value of Rs. 2,25,000/- (Total value of the ticket including Taxes) and above would be eligible for 1 Business Class return international ticket (Fuel Surcharge and Taxes to be borne by the passenger) on any of the sectors operated by Air India.
  • travel on Air India Domestic network during the promo period for a value of Rs. 3,00,000/- (Total value of the ticket including Taxes) and above would be eligible for 1 Business Class return international ticket (Only Taxes to be borne by the passenger) on any of the sectors operated by Air India.
  • The promotion is applicable for all travel on Indian sectors and against INR fare only.

The way I look at this promotion is that it gives frequent flyers who choose Air India a great opportunity to maximise their flying RoI. A BOM-EWR return trip in Business Class on Air India usually prices at Rs. 1,60,000 – Rs. 1,70,000 or whereabouts including Rs. 11,500 of taxes. So, if you do fly worth Rs. 3,00,000 on AI around India, you are simply getting 50% of your money back by booking a trip on AI on Mumbai to New York. And that is maybe the longest non-stop they operate at this moment. Even on other propositions the offer is very lucrative and has a 35-50% RoI.

Other important terms and conditions include:

    • The claim for Award tickets should be made by 31st October 2012. The Award tickets would be valid for a period of six months from the date of issue and the return journey would have to be completed within the validity period.
    • Blackout periods for the utilization of the free tickets will be applicable. Blackout periods would vary from sector to sector.

Here are more details on this promotion if you intend to make use of it.
