Indian airlines are offering fee waivers to reschedule tickets into/out of Delhi over September 7 – 11, 2023

India will hold the G20 (Group of 20) summit in New Delhi on September 9-10, 2023. This would mean that world leaders and their contingents from 42 countries are travelling to Delhi to attend the summit in the coming days. These include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkiye, the UK and the US) and the European Union countries.

G20 Summit in Delhi causes airlines to cancel flights operating into and out of Delhi

Due to the requirement of many parking bays at Delhi Airport for the arriving dignitaries, Delhi Airport has had to get airlines to cancel some operations in Delhi in the coming days. While customers should have already heard about these cancellations, now the airlines are also offering free changes to their customers so that they don’t travel into or out of Delhi at the time of the summit (which is a high-security event and the city is heavily guarded).

The following airlines have proceeded to provide a one-time fee waiver:

  • Air India: Passengers holding confirmed tickets to fly to or from Delhi between 7-11 September 2023 are being offered a one-time waiver of applicable charges if they wish to change their date of travel or their flight. Only the fare difference for the rescheduled flight, if any, would be applicable.

  • Vistara: Passengers holding confirmed tickets to fly to or from Delhi between 8-11 September 2023 are being offered a one-time waiver of applicable charges if they wish to change their date of travel or their flight. Only the fare difference for the rescheduled flight, if any, would be applicable.

  • IndiGo: Passengers holding confirmed tickets to fly to or from Delhi between 8-11 September 2023 are being offered a one-time waiver of applicable charges if they wish to change their date of travel or their flight. Only the fare difference for the rescheduled flight, if any, would be applicable.

Unfortunately, even if you avail the waivers, you must pay the fare difference. Also, for the lack of any specific differentiation here, one can assume that domestic and international flights will both be offered for rebooking by all three airlines offering a waiver.

Bottomline

Various Indian airlines are offering a one-time opportunity to cancel or reschedule flights into/out of Delhi, if the arrival or departure of the passengers coincides with the G20 summit being held in Delhi between September 9-10, 2023. If you are affected and are looking to reschedule your flights, please have a chat with Air India/ Vistara/ IndiGo.
