Of special interest to us is Marriott Bonvoy. Usually, Marriott offers a ratio of 3 Marriott Bonvoy points to convert into 1.1 United Mileage Plus Miles. Additionally, when you transfer out 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points, you get a 5,000-mile bonus as well. So, when you convert 60,000 Marriott points, you receive 27,000 United Mileage Plus points in your account. In this case, you will receive an additional 8,100 United Mileage Plus miles as well, making it 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points = 35,100 United Mileage Plus miles.

Double Dipping with the American Express Transfer Bonuses

American Express has announced a transfer bonus with Marriott Bonvoy in India, the US and other markets as well. In India, the transfer bonus is 30%, while in the US, the transfer bonus is 20%. In the US, there are other programmes with a transfer bonus as well ongoing from Amex. Since a lot of our audience is Indian, we will focus on the transfer bonus of India here.

When you transfer 46,200 Membership Rewards points to Marriott Bonvoy, with the 30% bonus, it becomes 60,060 Marriott Bonvoy Points. I will round it down to 60,000 for simplicity. These 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points convert into 35,100 United Mileage Plus Miles. That essentially means 46,200 Membership Rewards points to become 35,100 United Mileage Plus Miles.

A couple of things to note with this United promotion. Firstly, United Mileage Plus miles do not expire. However, the award charts are dynamic in case you want to redeem in the US or across the globe with Star Alliance. Second, United Mileage Plus will cap the conversion of the bonus points at 25,000 bonus miles. These bonus miles will be credited into the account of the member by January 31, 2023.

Bottomline

United is offering a 30% bonus on the conversion of Marriott Bonvoy reward points to United Mileage Plus through September 30, 2022, 11:59 Eastern Standard time. The bonus United Mileage Plus miles are capped at 25,000 miles. 1. I have transferred 60k bonvoy points to United and received 27500 points.
Don’t know why I have received 500 extra points.
The 30% bonus is yet to be posted.

  2. If I transfer today, 09/29, It would take 3 days (according to blogs) for United miles to be deposited into my United account. Would I still get the bonus? Thanks.

  3. Ajay for the bonus point cap of 25k – will only the 8100 miles be counted or the 5k bonus for Marriott transfers would also be considered?

So if I transfer 120k marriott points in two tranches. Total United Miles that I would get could be 70,200 United miles – if the bonus miles are 16200 or 69000 United miles if the bonus miles are 26200( capped to 25k)?

    • @Lloyd, 120K Marriott Bonvoy Points will transfer into 44K United MP Miles + 10K United MP Miles bonus from Marriott Bonvoy (54K Miles). On the whole, you get a 30% bonus, so it will be 16,200 bonus from United MP.

  4. Thanks for the information. I am regular reader if your website. Keep it up. This transfer (Especially from Amex MR to Bonvoy to United) offers very good value of MR points. Just have one query: As per T&C of this transfer on Amex website, Bonus Marriott Bonvoy Points will be credited to the
concerned Marriott Bonvoy membership ID (which is used for Membership Rewards points transfer) within 12 weeks from the offer end date. By that time, United bonus offer would have end. In that case does this transfer make sense?
