Akasa Air, founded by ex-Delta and Jet Airways veteran, Vinay Dube, has crossed a major milestone today, clearing the final hurdles towards launch. The airline, which has ordered 72 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, and received its first aircraft in June 2022, has finally received its license to operate a scheduled airline in India.

Akasa Air receives its Air Operators Certificate

Akasa Air today received its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India.

The grant of the AOC is the final step of a comprehensive and rigorous process laid down by the DGCA and marks the satisfactory completion of all regulatory and compliance requirements for the airline’s operational readiness. Following the Indian government’s initiative to usher in a new era of digitisation, Akasa Air became the first airline whose end-to-end AOC process was conducted using the government’s progressive eGCA digital platform. The process concluded with the airline having successfully conducted a number of proving flights under the supervision of the country’s aviation regulator. These flights were operated at various airports in India in on July 4 and 5, 2022.

Commenting on the significant milestone, Vinay Dube, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Akasa Air said

We are extremely thankful to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the DGCA for their constructive guidance, active support and the highest levels of efficiency throughout the AOC process. We now look forward to opening our flights for sale, leading to the start of commercial operations by late July. This will begin our journey towards building India’s greenest, most dependable, and most affordable airline.

From here on, Akasa will have to formally approach the various airports in India to receive its slots. After the slots and night parking are firmed up, the airline should open up booking for the first routes, which it intends to launch in July 2022 itself.

Akasa has received the formal license to operate a scheduled airline, so from here on, it is no longer just an aviation company, but an actual airline. They will now have to get slot allocations from the airports, and from there, they will be ready to launch their flights, which they intend to do in July 2022 itself.
