The mailbox had a sweet piece of news this afternoon from Lufthansa. Lufthansa clearly looks at India as a valuable market, as has been signified by their introduction of the Boeing 747-8i in India at an early stage, their investment in a lounge in Delhi and the upgrade of the business class in flights from Mumbai.
Today, I spotted an interesting piece of news tucked away in a corner of a mailer from LH.
FlyNet is the Lufthansa wifi internet offering, and LH has been trying to get as many planes equipped with on-board wifi as fast as possible. LH flies the Boeing 747-400 with the new First Class on-board from Mumbai to Frankfurt, the Airbus 330-300 with new Business Class on-board from Mumbai to Munich. From Chennai, they fly the Airbus A340-300 to Frankfurt.
Costs: Lufthansa has tied up with Deutsche Telekom to power their in-flight wifi. The cost of use is stated at 10.95 Euros for an hour, or 19.95 Euros for 24 hours of usage. The 24 hour pass can be used, while valid, on any Lufthansa aircraft equipped with FlyNet.
For Miles & More members, LH also provides the opportunity to redeem miles for using this facility. 3,500 miles for a 1-hour use, and 7,000 miles for a 24-hour usage.
While the cost looks expensive, at about 20 Euros for a day pass, on a business trip with tight deadlines, this will help keep a tab on everything even while you fly.
So, LH scores one more time in India, being the first service provider to provide in-flight wifi for flights operating from India.

Without power ports, I’m afraid this is pretty useless. Who has an 11 hour laptop battery?
I have used it to/from India earlier on LH with Connexxion.
Wasn’t Connexion by Boeing available on at least one commercial passenger flight to/from India before. I used to use it regularly on my Europe to East Asia flights operates by SAS, amongst other flights.
@GuWonder, To the best of what I know, no flights to/from India offered Internet connectivity before.

Be advised that LH and SQ used to offer internet using Connexxion by Boeing to/from Southeast Asia on board their aircraft equipped with this hardware.

Seriously, nobody is interested in e-mailing on the outbound leg – we have already exhausted any potential candidates by the time LH757 heads out of BOM, when in the lounge or on board enjoying our champagne.
However, on the return leg it might be worthwhile, as India normally works later into the late evening hours…
