On the back of an anticipated re-opening of the US Borders to the rest of the world, British Airways is preparing for a surge in demand for travel, just like one of its shareholders Qatar Airways which is also bringing back the Airbus A380 after deciding to scrap it for good. Here is hoping this inspires more airlines like Etihad to also bring back their A380s into service.

British Airways A380 to return to service in November 2021

British Airways will introduce the A380 aircraft in its fleet in November 2021, with additional services to cities across the globe, including the US.

The British Airways A380 will initially operate to several short-haul destinations to allow for crew service familiarisation in November 2021, followed by operations to Miami and Los Angeles in the US and Dubai in December 2021. While there is no confirmation from the airline, it is anticipated that British Airways will start flights between London and Frankfurt in November 2021, to be followed by trips between London and Madrid.

British Airways is anticipating a massive surge in trans-Atlantic traffic on the back of the announcement that vaccinated people will be able to travel to the United States from November 2021 onwards. The new A380 routes can be already seen on the British Airways website:

• From December 3, 2021, BA will operate an A380 service to Dubai
• From December 5, 2021, BA will operate an A380 service to Miami
• From December 9, 2021, BA will operate an A380 service to Los Angeles

In picking up the A380 for operations to the US from December 2021 onwards, BA is safe since there is currently no knowledge on the exact date of lifting the embargo on the US Borders for those travelling from other countries beyond the fact it will be sometime in November 2021.

British Airways A380 aircraft are nothing to write home about, given BA has the same premium cabin (Club World) on the A380 that it has been using for many years.

British Airways to add more transatlantic capacity as well

Across its US network, British Airways will be increasing the number of flights it operates with services to city destinations, including New York, which will initially be increasing to five a day. The airline will also be operating double-daily services to Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, Dallas, Miami and Toronto, and daily services to Philadelphia, Phoenix, Seattle, Atlanta, Denver, Houston and Vancouver.

In addition to frequency increases, British Airways will restart services to Austin, Orlando, Tampa, San Diego, Las Vegas, and Baltimore in October and November. In December, the airline will also start flying to Nashville and New Orleans once again.

Flights to famous luxury Indian Ocean destinations, Maldives and Mauritius, will also increase to 10 and six per week over Christmas.

Bottomline

British Airways is bringing back the A380, as they expect the requirements of travel to shoot up as the US borders open up again in the coming weeks. While this might indicate more travel is coming up, it is British Airways’ A380, so the product is from the last generation!
