One of the consequences of the CoVid-19 pandemic was, that out of umpteen caution, airlines were asked to take away the hand-baggage allowance of their passengers when domestic flights restarted, only leaving room for their check-in baggage. Check-in bags were also reduced to just one piece, but the baggage allowance was increased to 20 kgs to make up for the loss of hand-baggage allowance. Baggage allowance India domestic flights was in effect increased for no-frill carriers, as passengers were carrying big handbags as well.

There was a review of the situation, and the Ministry of Civil Aviation of India has now allowed airlines to return to their prior baggage policies. Here is the circular issued in regard to baggage allowance India domestic flights.

Consequently, airlines have started reverting to their earlier policies regarding baggage allowance.

Vistara baggage allowance India domestic flights

As per a statement issued by Vistara, In response to the latest advisory issued by the government regarding check-in baggage, we shall be restoring the pre-COVID baggage allowance effective September 28. Customers’ convenience and safety remain our topmost priorities. For reference, here is the pre-CoVid-19 Baggage allowance.

Air India

Air India has already reverted to their old generous baggage allowance, with no restrictions for the number of pieces you can carry. Even if your tickets say one piece, you can now take multiple pieces from now on as long as your ticket was issued by Air India (098 ticket code). Other Star Alliance or Codeshare airline partners would issue tickets as per their own baggage allowance rules.

Air India Express baggage allowance India domestic flights

Air India Express has also reverted to their old baggage allowance, with no restrictions for the number of pieces you can carry. 25 kgs in check-in baggage and 7 kgs in hand baggage.

No Frill Carriers

No Frills carriers such as IndiGo, SpiceJet and AirAsia India will also return to their older baggage allowance policies, but for tickets issued from September 25, 2020, onwards. Which means, if your ticket states a 20 kg baggage allowance it will still be honoured, but tickets issued here on will be only at the older baggage allowance of 15 kgs.
