Last year, Mumbai Airport had launched a service where they would sell hot meals at Terminal 1 of the Airport, which you could take along on the aircraft. The service was significant because Terminal 1 mainly serves the no-frill carriers, and you need to buy a meal on the plane, so you could buy one before the flight itself.
Now, Mumbai Airport is all set to launch a new service called Order Ahead, which it will launch in June 2019, and which will be made available on both Terminal 1 and 2 of the airport. This new service will allow you to pre-order food and have it delivered at your gate, or picked up by you as you approach the airport.
Not just that, you will be able to order food from different outlets under a single invoice and pay for it in one go. The service, which will be powered by a company called Grabbngo, which calls itself a Virtual Drive Thru, will have a mobile app, and you can also order via kiosks set up at the airport itself. I could not find the app on the Apple App Store at the moment.
To make such a service available to the passengers, the platform has associated with several Mumbai Airport Food Outlets present at CSMIA including KFC, Burger King, Subway, Pizza Hut, and others. A lot of questions in my head though. For instance, what if you board before the delivery person makes it to the gate? And what if your flight posts a delay.
Such concepts are pretty popular at least at American airports, and it would be cool to have such a service at Indian airports as well. Although how well it executes and scales up is something I am curious to see.
What do you think of the new developments? And would you want your food delivered at the gate as well?
Now people will fight with the concessionaires if their flight is delayed. All the sob stories will come out, and over time this service will be stopped 🙂
PS. Nice to see you on TPG yesterday. Wasnt aware you also contributed for them
