1 Day Only! 90000 Avios for 20000 Rupees

On Friday, Iberia launched a special weekend promotion, where they are offering 9000 Avios to members of the Iberia Plus frequent flyer program, when they book a ticket between 22 and 24 June 2018 for travel anytime. You can get a maximum of 90000 Avios, which means 10 such tickets could net you the 90000 Avios. The bonus miles post to your account within 10 days of your booking the tickets, not after the flight. The catch, you need to use the Avios by December 1, 2018, or they get taken away.

When you click through to the promotion, you see the awesomeness of this promotion.

Special offer of an extra 9,000 Avios for each ticket purchased between 21 and 24 June 2018 (maximum of 90,000 promotional Avios per member) on iberia.com for a flight operated by Iberia, Iberia Express or Air Nostrum. The Avios will be added within 10 days of the purchase to the Iberia Plus account of all customers identified as members of the Iberia Plus programme during the purchase process.

If the customer requests a refund, either because it is permitted by the fare or for any other reason, the promotional Avios will be withdrawn from their account. The extra promotional Avios not redeemed by 1 December 2018 will be withdrawn from the customer’s account. The redemption terms and conditions are subject to the general terms and conditions of the Iberia Plus programme.

The reason I did not bring it up on Friday, was because it looked like it had loose ends. But now everything is clarified. So here is how it looks like

  • 9000 Avios per ticket booked, up to 10 tickets. Your flight needs to be operated by Iberia, Iberia Express or Air Nostrum. Remember, not British Airway codeshare or anything. Pure Iberia or Air Nostrum.
  • Book by June 24 (today Madrid time)
  • You need to book specifically on Iberia.com. Not through any OTAs.
  • One-way trips should work out fine.
  • Avios come in within 10 days of purchase.
  • You have to redeem your Avios by December 1, or else you lose them.
  • No registration required, just your Iberia frequent flyer number on the booking when you make the booking

Iberia has confirmed to numerous people that even if you don’t fly these segments, you are going to be able to keep the miles.

Yesterday, I and Shipra were in meetings all day, so, right before hitting the sack, we decided to pull the trigger. We managed to get tickets for 24 Euros per head on many routes last night. This morning, on a random route, I could still see 28 Euro availability.

Now, before you go all bonkers with this deal, remember, your redemptions need to be made via the Iberia Plus program, which is a different program than BA Executive Club.

Remember, the deal scales. So, you have 5 members in your family, you can have 5 Iberia Plus Accounts and so on. Shipra and I kept the rest of our family out of this. Just booked for the both of us, and the average cost of one ticket for one person came to INR 2000 (No idea if the forex charge is over this or included, but still a great deal) for 9000 Avios.

A pro-tip to sweeten the deal for you in India. I booked my tickets through the use of the HDFC Bank Diners Black Credit Card for the first 8 tickets, and Diners Black gives a 10X on International transactions through an approximate amount of INR 33000. So, I expect INR 11000 back as points or equivalent cash, and all-inclusive, for two people we ended up spending approximately 30,000 INR which means, 0.17 INR per Avios earned.

Here is the Avios Redemption Chart for oneworld airlines.

Remember, with a promotion this good, the Iberia website could go down, as it did last evening. Just stay persistent like I did.

  1. Hi Ajay,

What’s the best way to redeem avios? I checked redemptions on british airways and their carrier charges + taxes was so high it did not seem worth it. Buying an economy class ticket and upgrading seemed the best proposition. Is there something I am missing out on?

  2. Hi Ajay
Does the below info still work in favor of those booking from India?

‘The promotion is available when the tickets are bought on iberia.com in the following countries: Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Russia, United Kingdom, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Mexico and USA, regardless of the origin of the flight. So, you will get the 9,000 Avios, if you book a flight from Athens to Madrid, or from Johannesburg to Madrid, etc… operated by Iberia, on any of the iberia.com sites mentioned above’

    Cheers
    S&S

    • @S&S, what you have written is not something that Iberia has published in their own T&C. Additionally, you need to buy from Iberia Spain or one of these countries, which I presume you would anyways do since they don’t operate in India.

  3. Snagged the SDR-MAD leg 10 times for 24.27EUR!!

Make sure to click on “I’m Flying” on the passenger details page. Learnt the hard way, that even if I am logged in, the reservation didn’t take my FF #. Thanks Ajay!

  4. When trying to search for destinations from India on the Iberia Plus’ Avios redemtion page, it is not showing any options for Mumbai or Delhi.

You guys may also want to try a hack… book for a future date, get the Avios, use the Avios and then cancel the orginal ticket.

    • Because Iberia doesn’t fly it’s own metal to India. You can transfer miles to BA anytime. For oneworld partners, you have to call to make a reservation

  5. Unable to book because Iberia keeps saying my Iberia plus number doesn’t match my name on account. Anyone getting this message?

    • No Nhi, It worked fine for me. Probably something wrong with the account setup. Just click on the I am traveling, if doesn’t work might want to check with iberia
