The Tata Group’s Indian Hotels Company Limited, which operates hotels under brands such as Taj, Vivanta and SeleQtions, has launched its sustainability programme, Paathya. Under this programme, Taj parent Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL) has set several short and long-term goals to be fulfilled by 2030. This includes all its hotels being certified to a global sustainability standard.
IHCL’s Paathya sustainability initiative
IHCL is heading out for various initiatives under their new Paathya initiative. These include,
- 100% elimination of single-use plastic across all its hotels
- Ensuring 100% of wastewater is reused
- 100% of hotels will be certified to a global sustainability standard
- 50% Energy from Renewable Sources
- All business meetings and conferences will go green
- Parking Areas will get EV Chargers
78 IHCL hotels have achieved EarthCheck certification with 47 receiving Platinum recognition already, which IHCL claims is the largest in the global tourism industry.
IHCL MD & CEO Puneet Chhatwal, on the occasion, said:
Today, it has become even more important to chart a new tomorrow – one that is more sustainable and inclusive. We believe this is the only way to drive India’s journey to be among the top travel and tourism economies. The launch of Paathya is in line with IHCL’s commitment to strengthen its resolve of contributing to society with an integrated approach towards creating sustainable growth and positive impact. This reaffirms our founder, Jamsetji Tata’s vision of keeping community at the heart of the business.
With this announcement, Tatas finally join the sustainability bandwagon in a more organised format. ITC Hotels have already been making sustainable moves for a long long time, working with LEED Ratings for their hotel certification, providing Bamboo Toothbrushes and using glass water bottles in their hotels for a few years now, if not more. Some Taj Hotels had the same initiatives on a local level, but the chain did not make moves on a group level so far.
Bottomline
IHCL is finally entering the sustainable era on a group level, organising its sustainability initiatives, to be achieved by 2030, under the Paathya programme. The hotel chain will work on eliminating single-use plastic, reuse of wastewater, installing EV charges, amongst other things in the months ahead.
What do you think of the IHCL initiatives towards sustainability? Good start or too little too late?
