SPG announces 2016 category changes: Indian hotels get expensive in awards!

The season for hotel category adjustments is here and while we have shared with you the changes for IHG and Marriott, now Starwood has announced its category changes for 2016. The change will come in to effect from March 1, 2016. As a quick reminder Starwood hotels globally range between categories 1 to 7 and operate under the following brand names. Global Impact Overall 282 Starwood hotels have been affected this year with the category change. 168 hotels are going up and 114 are going down the index, clearly indicating that overall the Starwood portfolio has gotten expensive.  The regions with maximum number of increases are US, Europe and Asia and there have been significant category decreases in Canada, Russia…

Starwood postpones India property opening, leaves me in the lurch

One of the anticipated hotel launches for the year for me is the Le Meridien Mahabaleshwar Resort & Spa. This is a resort that has been in the making forever, and I was very excited when they decided to open up March 1, 2015. Eager to check it out earlier than everyone else, I went ahead and made reservations for the coming weekend, except, the property has not opened doors yet. I got an email from the sales team of the hotel, a month ago informing me about the fact that the hotel is not opening. No remorse, nothing except an apology. As if, I am supposed to take it as fait accompli that the hotel decided not to open…
