Status Match Opportunity: Get upto SkyTeam Elite Plus Status (useful as Star Alliance Gold in the future)

ITA Airways, the relabelled version of Alitalia, has launched a new opportunity to status match. Here are the details of why this is important and useful for you in the future.

ITA Airways’ New Status Match Opportunity

ITA Airways took Alitalia’s spot in the SkyTeam alliance once the airline was relaunched under the new banner. SkyTeam, for reference, has airlines such as Virgin Atlantic, Delta, Air France, and KLM as members. On its launch, ITA Airways released a status match opportunity and is now back with another chance for you to Status match into their loyalty programme, Volare.

Volare is currently offering the opportunity to status-match to the tier members of 19 different carriers. These include:

  • Aegean (Star Alliance)
  • Aer Lingus (oneworld)
  • Air China (Star Alliance)
  • American Airlines (oneworld)
  • British Airways (oneworld)
  • Emirates
  • Etihad
  • Finnair (oneworld)
  • Iberia (oneworld)
  • LATAM
  • Malaysia Airlines (oneworld)
  • Oman Air
  • QANTAS (oneworld)
  • Qatar (oneworld)
  • Singapore Airlines (Star Alliance)
  • TAP (Star Alliance)
  • Thai Airways (Star Alliance)
  • Turkish Airlines (Star Alliance)
  • WestJet

Here is how the status will be matched across the existing status and the new Volare Status. New Status will be valid till December 2025.

The Status Match opportunity is only available through August 19, 2024, for Volare members (new and old) who have not benefited from a status match opportunity earlier and reside outside Italy as per their residence address registered on the account. I know British Airways, Etihad, Singapore Airlines, and Emirates have a tonne of Indian loyalists, so this is a great opportunity for them. This also works for those with any of these statuses listed here as of January 2023 or later, so even expired status works.

How to apply for Volare Status Upgrade?

To apply for the Status Match opportunity, log into your Volare account and request a free status match. It does not matter if you have a new or old account.

You must provide your other airline’s card and a copy of your identity document to prove it is your status.  Initial reports suggest that the Status Match is being granted within hours in some cases, but the airline asks for up to 60 days to get this done.

Translating this into Star Alliance Status

Within Q4 2024, Lufthansa will acquire ITA Airways, as they now have the go-ahead from the EU for this. When this happens, Volare will be merged into Miles & More. Most likely, Volare members will be given equivalent status in Miles and More, with a Star Alliance Silver/Gold equivalence.

Bottomline

If you are an airline frequent flyer, you should be in on this status match from ITA Airways. It will grant you SkyTeam status now, which should convert from some point in late 2024 / 2025 into Lufthansa Miles & More status in Star Alliance. Additionally, it is free, so you don’t have to pay a penny for the status, whether you use it or not later.

What do you think of the opportunity to earn status in ITA Airways?
