Between now and December 29, 2017, Starwood is offering a 35% discount on the purchase of Starpoints. The 35% discount is applicable on a minimum purchase of at least 5,000 Starpoints in a single transaction.
Starpoints generally cost 3.5 US cents per point purchased, however, if you buy the maximum number of points under this offer the price per Starpoint will drop to 2.28 US cents.
A maximum of 30,000 Starpoints can be purchased every calendar year and SPG accounts have to be activated for a minimum of 14 days to be eligible to participate in this sale promotion.
I don’t ever remember Starwood offering a better than 35% discount on points purchase, so this is a good deal if you are looking at stacking up your SPG account. There is an opportunity to convert your Starpoints to Marriott Rewards points in the ratio of 1:3. This is great as the value of 1 Marriott Rewards point will drop to 0.75 US cents.
Additionally, Starwood also has an ongoing offer until February 2018, where SPG members can redeem award nights at 35% off at 8 of Starwood’s most expensive resorts. So again makes sense to stack up points if you have your eye on any one of these 8 resorts.
Bottomline
This is a good opportunity to buy Starpoints if you have been considering it. Given how flexible Starpoints can be with redemptions across Marriott hotels as well, I’d say it is one of the most valuable hotel points to keep. Of course, I wouldn’t buy and hoard points just for the heck of it. Here are 10 great Marriott Hotels where Starpoints can come handy for reward stays.
