Star Alliance member airline TAP Air Portugal has launched a renewed status match promotion to bring in their fold the elite status members of several other loyalty programmes and hope that they would fly with TAP Air Portugal in the future by matching up their existing status.

Currently, in its 75th year, the TAP Air Portugal airline’s Miles&Go loyalty programme is offering a straight-up status match to the members of various programmes, enlisted below. In this case, they do have a small hurdle for you to cross, but it is not a status challenge where you need to do x number of flights to make status.

Matching Status for the first time with TAP Air Portugal

The programmes whose status would be matched include:

• American Airlines AAdvantage
• Aeroflot Bonus
• Aerolineas Plus
• Air Europe SUMA
• MEA Cedar Miles
• AeroMexico Club Premier
• Etihad Guest
• British Airways Executive Club
• FinnAir Plus
• KLM/Air France Flying Blue
• Iberia Plus
• LATAM Pass
• Alitalia MilleMiglia
• Czech Airlines OK Plus
• Qatar Privilege Club
• Royal Jordanian Royal Club
• Royal Air Maroc Safar Flyer
• Delta SkyMiles
• Emirates Skywards
• GOL Smiles
• Tudo Azul

Some of these programmes are very well spread out in India. In order to take advantage of this offer, you will need to sign up as a member of TAP’s Miles&Go programme first, if you are not already a member. You will get an opportunity to upload the image of your other card there itself.

If you have joined the programme after January 1, 2020, register for the status match and send in a picture of your existing status card with the other programme from which you are requesting a match to statusmatch@tapmilesandgo.com. It should clearly show your name, membership number, status level and expiry date.

You will receive a provisional confirmation from TAP Miles&Go within 30 days. Your existing Silver Status will match to Silver Status and Gold/Platinum Status will match to Gold status. Once you receive this provisional approval, you need to make one of the following choices:

• Join Club TAP Miles&Go, which starts at 99 Euros (INR 8400) and provides you with a bonus Miles&Go miles when travelling.
• Purchase at least 70 Euros (INR 6000) worth of miles in the programme.

Once you have completed all the above steps, your new Miles&Go elite status will be confirmed within 15 days and will be valid for 12 months.

Retaining status with TAP Air Portugal

TAP Miles&Go has also provided some generous terms for you to extend your status over the next year, which is half the usual requirements. When you fly four flights with TAP Portugal over the next year and earn 25,000 Status Miles in the programme (i.e., by crediting Star Alliance flights to the programme and TAP Portugal flights), you will earn status for another year. 25000 tier miles is just half of the usual requirement.

If you fly four flights with TAP Portugal and earn 25,000 Status Miles in the programme (i.e. by crediting Star Alliance flights to the programme), your Gold status will be extended by a further 12 months. This is half the normal requalification requirements.

Benefits of Star Alliance Gold / Silver

Star Alliance Gold status offers you the following perks:

• Lounge Access for you and another passenger on a Star Alliance airline
• Priority Baggage Handling
• Business Class Check-in
• Bonus Miles due to tier status
• Extra Baggage Allowance, amongst others.

Star Alliance Silver comes only with airport standby benefits.

In case you travel, even with Air India, you should look at getting this status for 12 months at least. While there does not seem to be an end date for the promotion, you would do well to not wait because you never know when the promotion could be pulled.
