There seems to be widespread reorganisation of airport capacity with Jet Airways folding up. At Delhi Airport, with expansion in mind, it was announced that IndiGo and SpiceJet will move out from Terminal 2 (IndiGo partly albeit), and relocate to Terminal 3. This way, IndiGo would now offer domestic flights from Terminal 1,2,3 at Delhi Airport, and SpiceJet from Terminal 1 and 3.

It seems that was not the only reshuffle that was going to happen. Today, SpiceJet has announced that they are moving out of the Mumbai Airport Terminal 1, and relocating their entire operations to Mumbai Airport Terminal 2 with effect from October 1, 2019. Till so far, SpiceJet was offering only some of their newer flights launched April 2019 onwards (78 in total) from Terminal 2, and most other flights would operate from Terminal 1.

SpiceJet states that it will lead to better synergies and cut down costs substantially for the airline. SpiceJet, at present, operates 150 daily flights connecting Mumbai.

Bottomline

It seems like with these moves, SpiceJet is aspiring to move away from being a no-frills carrier to a more hybrid carrier model. The Terminal 2 is any day a better terminal than terminal 1, and for SpiceJet customers, assures a better passenger experience. Combine this with the Business Class available on some flights . Also, there are better lounges at Terminal 2 Domestic, including the GVK Lounge, the TFS Travel Club Lounge and the American Express Lounge.

Not just that, I’m guessing SpiceJet got a sweet bargain from GVK, given Terminal 2 Domestic was a ghost town as compared to the past, and Terminal 1 was still a glorified bus stop atmosphere with people packed in to the brim.
