Singapore Airlines Premium Economy A380: Details about the new product

Singapore Airlines is updating the A380 look and feel of the A380 cabins, starting with the new A380s they are about to receive this month and flying next month onwards.

Today in a launch they have shared details of the new A380 cabin (we had them yesterday!) and the first one we know about is the new Skyroom Suites. However, the Business Class will join at the back of the Suites class to give the Singapore Airlines A380 a full premium-deck on the upper-deck of the A380.

Coming to the Premium Economy cabin which will be placed ahead on the main deck, there are tonnes of details out now as well. But the only thing that has changed, is the positioning of the PEY class. It has moved from the back of First Class to being in the nose of the lower deck of the plane.

Each A380 would come with 44 PEY seats, up from the current number on the old A380s and these would be organised in a 2-4-2 fashion. That should make it the biggest PEY cabin for SQ on any of the planes they operate so far.

The seat pitch on each of these seats will be 38″, and a width of 19.5″ on each seat. The seats carry a 13.3-inch monitor on each seat for IFE as well.

What this means is that SQ has gone back to the original seat they selected for the Premium Economy, skipping the version they installed on the A350s which had the seat width down to 19″.

SQ’s philosophy about premium economy always has been to cover as many markets with the same product as possible, but then make up for the difference in the hard product with service to match. That eye to detail reflects here as well. The food looks delicious!

Other features include a full leather finishing, calf-rest and foot-bar for every seat, individual in-seat power supply, two USB ports, personal in-seat reading light, cocktail table, and more stowage space for personal items. The Premium Economy Class seat was manufactured by ZIM Flugsitz GmbH and customised by design firm JPA Design.

Bottomline

While I’ve never travelled in PEY on SQ, I’ve seen this version of the seat and felt it before. It is awesome and good value for money for long-haul fliers. I’m glad to see SQ is bringing this seat up front on the main deck for the new A380s.
